WEISS North America, Inc is seeking an Electrical Controls Engineer to support our products from build through customer integration. The role involves hands-on work with electrical control systems, field devices, and automated machinery during assembly, commissioning, and support.

Job Description - Electrical Controls Engineer

WEISS North America is seeking a Controls Engineer with strong troubleshooting skills to support our products from build stage through customer integration. Our customers are machine builders and integrators connecting WEISS technologies into their own machine architectures, and they rely on our support by phone, video conference, and email to get that interface working. This is a hands‑on engineering role requiring the ability to work directly with electrical control systems, field devices, and automated machinery during assembly, commissioning, and customer support activities. The ideal candidate will demonstrate depth in either the Rockwell or the Siemens ecosystem, with real comfort in networking, logic sequencing, and troubleshooting. Parallel skills must include safe electrical practice and sound engineering fundamentals, along with the patience and temperament to walk a customer through correcting a problem while their production line is down and timing is critical.

The ideal candidate will have a minimum of 3 years’ experience of motion control components and controls, machinery, and factory automation equipment. The Controls Engineer must have a strong fundamental knowledge of control and electrical system design and its application in automated industrial designs. The ability to understand equipment integration and machine building is key in this position. This position does require travel for service, up to 15%.

Job Responsibilities - Electrical Controls Engineer

Troubleshooting & Customer Support:

• Serve as a primary technical resource for Sales, production, and customers on controls, motion, and electrical issues.
• Provide remote support to customer engineering teams integrating our units into their machine systems – drive setup, encoder feedback, homing, safety interfacing, and communication to their controller
• Diagnose faults across electrical, controls, drive, network, and instrumentation domains and drive them to resolution.
• Perform root cause analysis and feed corrective action back into design, documentation, and the parent factory.
• Travel to customer sites as needed for startup, commissioning, and escalated field issues.

Panel Design, Wiring & Test:

• Develop control panel layouts and enclosure designs; produce and revise schematics in AutoCAD Electrical, SOLIDWORKS Electrical, or equivalent.
• Specify and verify wiring, motor connections, connectivity, grounding, and shielding for servo and VFD applications.
• Power up, configure, and functionally test systems prior to shipment; execute and document Factory Acceptance Testing.
• Support the production and assembly floor with test equipment and project‑related electrical questions, issues, and failures.

Controls & Motion Engineering:

• Configure, program, and troubleshoot PLC logic and HMI applications.
• Size and select motors, drives, and machine power distribution – transformers, overcurrent protection, and conductor sizing.
• Configure drives and encoder feedback (various coded incremental and absolute); perform tuning, homing, and network setup.
• Following training from WEISS, become a key technical resource in W.A.S. (WEISS Application Software) for product support and controls offerings.

Safety, Code Compliance & Documentation:

• Work safely on and around systems operating up to 1000 V, including three‑phase distribution and servo DC bus circuits; apply NFPA 70E practice, lockout/tagout, and stored energy verification.
• Apply NFPA 79, NFPA 70 (NEC), and UL 508A to panel design and machine wiring; support UL field evaluations.
• Maintain schematics, revisions, test records, and customer turnover documentation; contribute to company standards and SOPs.
• Perform other miscellaneous job duties and related functions as directed.

Desired Skills & Experience:

• Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering, Electrical Engineering Technology, or Mechatronics, or an Associate’s Degree with equivalent demonstrated experience.
• 5 or more years of controls experience on automated machinery or integrated production equipment; 8 years or more if non‑degreed.
• Strong, demonstrated troubleshooting ability in either ecosystem – Rockwell (Studio 5000, RSLogix, Kinetix, FactoryTalk) or Siemens (TIA Portal, SINAMICS) – able to work through an unfamiliar machine and isolate a fault under pressure.
• Command of electrical engineering fundamentals sufficient to work safely and efficiently on systems up to 1000 V.
• Servo and VFD sizing, drive configuration, and motion tuning capability.
• Multi‑axis motion experience, including synchronous and asynchronous mapping for rotary, linear, and combined motion profiles.
• Electrical schematics and circuit diagrams, load calculations, and SCCR ratings; fluent generation and revision of drawings in AutoCAD Electrical, SOLIDWORKS Electrical, or EPLAN.
• Control panel layout and enclosure design capability.
• Working knowledge of NFPA 79, the NEC, and UL 508A as applied to control panels and machine wiring, and familiarity with machine safety requirements under ISO 13849-1 or IEC 62061.
• Proficient with the Microsoft Office suite.
• Effective verbal communication skills.
• Must be able to work independently with little supervision. Strong interpersonal and teamwork skills.
• Efficiently organize and plan work tasks to meet company goals and balance multiple projects and tasks with a sense of urgency.
• Able to stand or walk for the majority of the day and able to lift 50 pounds on a needed basis and up to 75 pounds with assistance.
• Able to regularly apply physical mobility (stretching, lifting, bending, twisting, etc.) to perform all assembly related assignments.

Travel Expectations:

• Up to 10–15% travel, primarily North America/Mexico, with the opportunity to travel to our parent facility in Germany for training and advancement.
