Job summary

University of North Carolina Wilmington is seeking an Electric Service Supervisor to coordinate and oversee the electrical section and its operations on campus. The role focuses on planning, installation, maintenance, and safety compliance for campus electrical systems and emergency power.

Brief Summary of Work for this Position

Electric Service Supervisor is responsible for coordinating and navigating responsibility for Electrical Section administration.
Responsibilities include:

• Lead in planning, scheduling, design, leadership, supervision, training, and installation, maintenance and repair of secondary electrical distribution systems, electrical equipment, lighting, fixtures and related components.
• Provide temporary installation of electrical power for public and university functions throughout campus.
• Submit purchase requisitions to ensure availability of materials and equipment to support work.
• Standardize products and procedures.
• Organize, train, and lead electrical crews to install and maintain campus secondary electrical power distributions, facility electrical devices and systems, university emergency generators and other electrical powered systems.
• Develop new and additional technology for life safety lighting systems maintenance and compliance testing in critical science and arts spaces.
• Oversee interaction with the maintenance, design, repair and installation of campus systems via in-house staffing and service/installation/repair contractors.

• Oversee contractors maintaining High voltage electrical distribution to support every critical University function directly and indirectly.
• Provide input to UNCW Utilities and Engineering Department, engineers, and project managers for long-term planning for high voltage resources to meet campus needs across campus.
• Provide condition/issues reports and recommendations to university design teams.
• Participate in long‑term planning for aged high voltage system, requiring extensive renovations and repairs over the next 10 years.
• Incorporate additional and new technology requiring development of departmental resources.
• Leadership:
  • Identify and communicate staffing gaps in existing resources, as well as gaps created by the extensive expansion over the previous 5 years.
  • Model and motivate based on a Facilities-wide developed approach to issues.
  • Prepare input and make critical decisions as conditions and business needs change.
  • Make specific salary recommendations for new and existing positions within the Electrical Department as needed to meet the demands of critical campus electrical systems.
• Management: consider the business needs of Facilities, not just Electrical, and provide input on capital/human resources.
• Lead safety program objectives with employees, contractors, subcontractors and third parties.

* This position has been designated as mandatory personnel for the University and may be required to report to work during adverse weather conditions even though the University may be operating on an alternate schedule. This position may delegate and personally work with snow, ice and/or debris removal under the direction of a supervisor.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

High school diploma or equivalency and two years of experience in trade(s) areas assigned; or equivalent combination of training and experience.

Preferred education, professional skills and experience

• Ability to supervise the maintenance of high voltage primary electrical systems via specialty contractor and service providers.
• Possess exceptional electrical trade knowledge and skills.
• Three years of progressive experience in electrical distribution and construction, general electrical maintenance, and two years of electric‑related supervisory experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Strong working knowledge of National Electrical Code and NC State Building Code.
• Ability to properly use and train on multimeters, ampmeters, meggars, and other trade test equipment.
• Ability to oversee contractors installing wiring, conduit installation, underground utility repair, splicing and terminating up to 12,500 Volts.
• Ability to diagnose faults and perform/supervise corrective repairs on secondary distribution wiring, transformers, switchgear, main and sub‑service panels, and complete building electrical distribution wiring, conduits, fixtures, and lighting.
• Ability to review plans, monitor work, evaluate code and standard applications, and inspect most electrical work performed on campus.
• General knowledge of techniques and principles involved in planning and budgeting for all electrical maintenance.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with administrative superiors and subordinate employees.
• Develop processes and procedures to ensure work meets applicable building/electrical codes at a minimum.

A valid NC drivers license or be able to obtain one within 30 days of employment.
