Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit:

The Physical Plant is one unit of the Facilities Organization which also includes Architecture and Construction Services, Project Management, Utilities and Engineering, Facilities Administration.

The primary purpose of the Physical Plant is to maintain the building, grounds, and infrastructure of the UNCW campus so that it is safe, reliable, clean, and attractive. This includes departments such as Electric, Fire Alarm, Food Services Maintenance, Housekeeping, HVAC, HVAC Controls, Landscaping, Motor Pool, Plumbing, Physical Security and Access and Locksmith Services and Roofing and General Maintenance.

The Motor Pool is a part of the Physical Plant. The unit provides support with the maintenance and operation of all vehicles and equipment used by the University.

Brief Summary of Work for this Position:

This position will perform all duties in the maintenance and repair of State‑owned automotive and related equipment, including heavy machinery, golf carts, small engines, electric carts, backhoes, bobcats, forklifts, tractors, and welding fabrication. Duties will include but are not limited to the following:

  • Work may involve the performance on a continuing basis of a variety of tasks in the repair, replacement or maintenance on automotive or construction equipment in accordance with established automotive repair and maintenance practices.
  • Responsible completion of all tasks from start to finish in every repair, such as accepting work order, contacting customer, diagnosing vehicle/machine, ordering parts from approved sources if necessary, testing for the desired result, and returning vehicle/machine within the deadline.
  • May require repairs of multiple systems within vehicles and/or equipment.
  • Ability to balance multiple priorities and tasks with special needs and deadlines.
  • Maintain in good working order the equipment used in ground maintenance, i.e., out front riding mowers, push mowers, tractors, loaders, edgers, weed eaters, chain saws, etc.
  • Perform small repairs of emergency generators.
  • Possess computer skills for tracking work and equipment and effectively communicate.
  • Attend mechanic workshops and short courses, as necessary or requested, to stay up‑to‑date with new practices and procedures, i.e.: State Inspection Licensing.
  • Other duties as assigned by supervisor, including welding services as trained and needed.

This position has been designated as mandatory personnel for the University and may be required to report to work during adverse weather conditions even though the University may be operating on an alternate schedule. This position may assist in the removal of snow, ice, or debris.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

High school diploma or equivalency; or demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work.

Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills & Experience:
  • Knowledge of techniques and methods involved in determining and solving mechanical difficulties and willingness to be trained on new equipment and practices.
  • Skilled in the performance of complex duties relating to the repair and maintenance of automotive equipment.
  • Ability to use and operate the various machines and instruments commonly found in an automotive repair shop.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
  • Physical strength sufficient to work at heavy manual labor for considerable periods of time.
  • Knowledge of diagnosing and repair of electric golf carts and/or electric vehicles.
  • Knowledge and ability to diagnose and repair forklifts.
Required Certifications or Licensures:
  • A valid NC Drivers' License, parts A & B, or ability to obtain within 3 months.
  • An NC State Inspection License or obtain within 3 months.
