Job description

The City of Albemarle is looking to expand our team with highly skilled Electric Line Technicians who are committed to quality, safety, and teamwork.

We currently have an open position and are looking for candidates who are eager to grow with us.

  • Electric Line Technician II (Intermediate Line Tech)

    • Annual pay range: $49,320 - $76,400*

  • Electric Line Technician III (Senior Line Tech)

    • Annual pay range: $54,380 - $84,300*

*Starting rates depend upon education and experience.

Scope of Role:

Performs skilled technical work assisting in the construction, maintenance and repair of underground and overhead lines in the electrical distribution system.

Performs skilled technical work in the installation, maintenance and repair of underground and overhead electrical distribution lines and in tree trimming and related line clearance work. Work is differentiated from journeyman level crew members by the less skilled phases of electrical distribution work. The employee is also responsible for the operation of various trucks and equipment such as line trucks, cable trucks, backhoes, and bucket trucks, and for answering calls for service to hook up and discontinue service. The employee works closely with the Electric Crew Leader to repair, splice and maintain electric overhead and underground distribution lines, transformers and services. and works in both energized and de-energized environments. The employee is expected to perform line tech level work, and to observe and perform skilled electrical distribution work under supervision of the Electric Crew Leader.The Senior Electric Line Technician supervises in the Electric Line Crew Leader’s absence. The employee is subject to on-call status for one week in a stand-by rotation.The employee applies standardized techniques and safety standards in daily work operation. Work requires being on-call for one week in a standby rotation as well as call-back responsibilities. The employee is subject to hazards associated with electrical work including working in both inside and outside environments, in extreme temperatures, and exposure to various hazards such as working at heights, loud noises, vibration, moving mechanical parts, electrical current, chemicals, fumes, odors, dusts, mists, gases, confined spaces, poor ventilation, and oils. Work is performed under supervision of the Electric Line Crew Leader and is evaluated through periodic conferences, observation of results achieved, and is reviewed in progress and upon completion for conformance to instructions and accepted standards.

  1. Repairs and maintains aerial and underground electrical distribution lines, and all associated equipment..
  2. Operates and maintains assigned trucks as needed; checks and keeps equipment in good operating condition, operates trenchers, track hoes, and other light, medium, and heavy equipment.
  3. Trims trees in and around primary and secondary lines.
  4. Responds to and handles a variety of electrical emergencies during and after working hours.
  5. Serves in the on-call rotation and responds to call-back when conditions mandate.
  6. Supervises the crew and conducts “tailgate meetings” in the absence of the Crew Leader; assists in training subordinate staff.
  7. Utilizes special testing equipment such as primary voltage and amperage indicators and primary phasing sticks, etc.
  8. Operates and maintains the tools used in electric distribution work.
  9. Performs “hot work” which includes changing poles, installing or replacing equipment,, distribution equipment maintenance, and all other distribution tasks.
  10. Able to connect various service voltages and transformer banks.
  11. Able to complete work orders and interpret construction blue prints.

Electric Line Tech II (Intermediate) Qualifications

Required:

  • Graduation from high school supplemented by technical training in electrical principles and considerable experience in a skilled trade, preferably electrical; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Special Requirements

  • Possession of a valid North Carolina commercial driver's license.
  • Certification as a graduate of Basic Climbing school, Basic and Intermediate Lineman schools, Substation school, Transformer school and Electric Safety certification as required by the City.
  • Training in Basic First Aid and AED use and Arc Flash Safety.


Electric Line Tech III (Senior) Qualifications

Required:

  • Graduation from high school and considerable experience in electric line construction and maintenance work; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • 4+ years of lineman experience.

Special Requirements

  • Possession of a valid North Carolina commercial driver's license.
  • Certification as a graduate of Basic Climbing school, Basic, Intermediate and Advanced Lineman schools, Basic Underground School, Basic Metering school, Substation school, Transformer school and Electric Safety certification as required by the City.
  • Training in Protective Grounding, Basic First Aid and AED use and Arc Flash Safety.
  • Must be able to physically perform the basic life operational functions of climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing and repetitive motions.
  • Must be able to perform heavy work exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
  • Must possess the visual acuity to operate mobile equipment, monitor work site progress, perform skilled electrical tasks, and inspect and assemble small parts.
