Job summary

American Electric Power (AEP) in Texas seeks a Line Mechanic C to install, maintain, and inspect electrical transmission and distribution facilities, including overhead and underground systems. The role builds on Line Mechanic D skills and requires CDL Class A and related experience; overtime and travel may be required.

You will progress through C-100 to C-400 classifications, handle energized work up to 600 volts under supervision, and contribute to safe switching and tagging procedures.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Minimum of one year distribution electrical power line work experience, OR one year of related line experience defined as: successful completion of a one year electrical power line school certificate plus a minimum of 16 weeks internship or distribution electrical power line experience, or an Associate degree from an electrical power line school which includes a minimum of 16 weeks internship or distribution electrical power line experience.
  • Valid Class A CDL is required.
  • Shall have performed the duties of and have all the qualifications of Line Mechanic D or the equivalent and shall qualify through demonstration, examination and/or performance appraisal as determined by the Company.
  • Must acquire within such time frame as determined by the Company, the qualifications necessary to perform the duties of the next higher classification in the line of progression, or vacate the current job classification.
  • A physical abilities assessment is also required for this position.
  • This role requires regular overtime and on-call response. Travel, including out of town travel, may also be required.

Responsibilities

  • Assemble, install, maintain, remove and inspect overhead and underground facilities including conductors, cables, transformers, fixtures, structures and other equipment under supervision as skill level dictates.
  • After completion of C-100 or equivalent, perform work on conductors and equipment energized up to 260 volts under general supervision.
  • After completion of C-100, test, de-energize and ground URD cable, splice and terminate URD cable, and troubleshoot and energize URD cable and equipment.
  • After completion of C-200, work on conductors and equipment energized up to 600 volts under general supervision; use volt meters, amp meters and other test equipment.
  • After completion of C-200, may cover up stationary tied in primary conductors and equipment under supervision.
  • After completion of C-300, may cover, transfer or move primary conductors and equipment under supervision.
  • During first twelve months, perform the same duties as outlined for Line Mechanic B under supervision.
  • Progress from direct to immediate supervision as skill level dictates.
  • Replace fuses and operate switching and sectionalizing devices energized at any voltage under supervision.
  • Build and erect equipment mountings and overhead transformer installations.
  • Conduct proper tagging procedures while performing switching of energized circuits.
  • Perform inspection and trouble-shooting of lines.
  • Direct the work of employees assigned to assist.
  • Complete Monthly Apprentice Cards and submit for review.
