Job summary

Appalachian Power Company is seeking a Line Mechanic at or near Beckley, WV to perform installation, maintenance and inspection of overhead and underground electric distribution facilities. You will work on energized and de-energized systems, assist with switching and restoration, and operate trucks and aerial devices.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required; lineworker program preferred for entry-level.
• Line Mechanic D: no experience required; entry-level candidates encouraged.
• Line Mechanic C/B/A: increasing experience or qualifications per progression.
• Must reside within 45 minutes of Beckley or Huntington service centers.
• Valid state driver’s license; CDL requirements applicable for higher classifications.

Responsibilities

• Construct, install, maintain, inspect, troubleshoot, repair, and remove distribution facilities and related equipment.
• Line work on energized and de-energized systems per safety rules and training.
• Assist with switching, sectionalizing, grounding, and restoration to ensure reliable service.
• Operate company equipment including trucks, aerial devices and digging tools.
• Install and troubleshoot URD systems, underground facilities, street lighting, transformers and banks.
• Inspect and maintain PPE, tools, vehicles and line equipment.
• Locate and fix faults and service interruptions using diagnostic tools.
• Follow safe work practices, pole-top/bucket-truck rescue and tagging procedures.
• Direct and assist apprentices; maintain records and training progress.
