Job summary

Washoe County School District Mendive Middle School seeks an English Language Development Paraeducator Assistant I to support EL students with targeted instruction under supervision. You will adapt activities, monitor progress, and collaborate with EL staff to boost language and content understanding.

Qualifications include 48–60 college units or equivalent and either one year of relevant experience or a HS diploma with two years of paraeducator experience.

Qualifications

• Completion of 48 semester or 60 quarter units from an accredited college/university (preferably in child development, education, special education, or related field).
• AND
• one (1) year of relevant experience.
• Option 2: High school diploma AND two (2) years of experience as a Paraeducator aide or in a similar instructional/guidance role.

Responsibilities

• Adapts classroom activities, assignments, and/or materials under the direction of the EL teacher and/or EL Facilitator for supporting language needs and building academic language and content knowledge.
• Assists students, individually or in small groups with lesson assignments to reinforce learning concepts and pre-teach background knowledge for EL access to grade-level content.
• Monitors EL student progress toward language/content objectives and provides feedback to students, EL teacher, site facilitator, and general education teacher.
• Collaborate with instructional staff to improve student language outcomes.
• Under EL teacher direction, helps instruct English learners to show language acquisition progress and academic skills.
• Demonstrates understanding of students' language needs and designs lessons to increase language development.
• Maintains confidentiality regarding all aspects of work with children and staff.
• Monitor and assist 'newcomer' students in class, at lunch, and recess.
