The Environmental, Health, and Safety (EHS) Coordinator serves as the strategic leader and hands-on champion for cultivating a world-class culture of safety, sustainability, and strict regulatory compliance within our precision aerospace machining facility. The primary purpose of this role is to design, implement, oversee, and continuously elevate the shop’s EHS processes. This position ensures absolute alignment with corporate standards, defense/aerospace customer requirements, and all governmental regulations (including OSHA, EPA, and DOT). Given the high-precision nature of aerospace manufacturing, the EHS Coordinator proactively mitigates operational risks unique to machining, including CNC machine guarding, chemical/coolant management, ergonomics, and hazardous waste disposal. By serving as the subject matter expert, this role drives incident-reduction strategies and fosters an environment where employee well-being and environmental stewardship are seamlessly integrated into our high-standard production workflows.

Responsibilities

Industrial Safety & Machine Safeguarding

• Conduct risk assessments, implement physical safeguarding, and manage Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) procedures tailored for heavy, legacy machines (e.g., Tacchi lathes, vintage horizontal boring mills).
• Maintain and audit safety interlocks, light curtains, and automated enclosure systems on advanced CNC platforms (e.g., Mazak i-670S, multi-tasking turning centers).
• Manage safeguards for high-pressure coolant systems, metal chip conveyors, mist collectors, and sharp scrap handling.

Health & Safety Management

• Maintain meticulous EHS records, including OSHA logs, training rosters, and Safety Data Sheets (SDS), ensuring absolute audit-readiness.
• Hazard & Risk Assessment: Conduct regular shop-floor hazard assessments, Job Safety Analyses (JSAs), and ergonomic evaluations to proactively mitigate operational risks.
• Develop, update, and manage comprehensive emergency response and disaster preparedness plans, ensuring the facility and team are equipped for crises.
• Conduct ergonomic assessments for heavy material loading/unloading and enforce appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) requirements across the floor.

Incident Investigation & Risk Mitigation

• Lead the thorough investigation of all accidents, injuries, near-misses, and environmental incidents. Identify root causes and implement robust Corrective and Preventive Actions (CAPA).
• Monitor, analyze, and report on key EHS performance metrics (e.g., TRIR, DART, near-miss trends) to drive continuous risk reduction.
• Utilize data-driven insights to champion continuous improvement initiatives, integrating safety seamlessly into Lean/5S operational workflows.

Culture & Training

• Develop and deliver engaging EHS training and awareness programs for employees, supervisors, and on-site contractors.
• Promote a highly collaborative \"Safety First\" culture that empowers shop-floor machinists and staff to take ownership of safety.
• Partner closely with Operations, Maintenance, Quality, Engineering, and HR to integrate safety into equipment purchasing, facility layout changes, and onboarding.

Requirements & Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Health & Safety, Environmental Science, Engineering, Industrial Hygiene, or a related technical discipline.
• 3+ years of progressive EHS experience within a manufacturing environment (aerospace, precision machining, or heavy industrial environments strongly preferred).
• Must be a U.S. Citizen due to the nature of the work, compliance with federal contracts, and exposure to ITAR/EAR-regulated technical data.

Preferred Certifications

• Certified Safety Professional (CSP) or Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH).
• ISO 14001 (Environmental) or ISO 45001 (Occupational Health & Safety) Lead Auditor certification.
• Experience working with exotic aerospace alloys (Titanium, Inconel, Nickel-based alloys) and associated fire safety/dust risks.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

• Deep understanding of OSHA, EPA, and DOT regulations, alongside a strong grasp of risk assessment, hazard identification, and root-cause analysis methodologies (e.g., 5-Why, Fishbone).
• Familiarity with Statistical Process Control (SPC) and data-driven problem-solving methodologies to track and improve safety processes.
• Strong interpersonal and employee relations skills, with the ability to build trust with shop-floor machinists, collaborate with maintenance personnel, and present data effectively to executive leadership.
• Highly organized and detail-oriented with a strong sense of accountability. Proven ability to remain agile, manage competing priorities, and navigate unexpected events or changing compliance landscapes.
• Native or professional fluency in English (written and verbal).
• High proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, specifically advanced utilization of Excel for data analysis and metric tracking.
