Job summary

Qualifications

• J.D. from an accredited law school is required.
• Licensed to practice law in Illinois is required.
• Knowledge of the Illinois School Code and charter school operations.
• Knowledge of the administrative code and relevant federal law.
• Ability to read, synthesize and communicate complex laws.
• Ability to maintain records and prepare reports.
• Strong public speaking and communication skills.
• Ability to lead large projects and multitask.

Responsibilities

• Review matters concerning interpretation of the Illinois School Code and general law.
• Provide legal advice to the State Board of Education, State Superintendent, Chief Legal Officer and agency management.
• Serve as primary legal contact for charter schools on certification, authorization and charter issues.
• Draft and review charter school authorization documents and related operation documents.
• Provide policy guidance and strategic decision-making support.
• Draft legal opinions and communications for the agency.
• Provide technical assistance to school administrators and stakeholders.
• Communicate with attorneys and government agencies and internal staff.
• Review legislation and rules and communicate the agency's position.
• Oversee relevant litigation and administrative proceedings.
