Job summary

Howard University is seeking an Associate Editor/Writer to research, interview, and develop engaging stories that support the University's editorial priorities across Howard Magazine, The Dig, newsletters, and annual reports.

You will transform complex information into accessible narratives, coordinate with editors and multimedia teams, and contribute to publication production, copyediting, and social media promotion.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in journalism, English, communications, history, or another writing-intensive field.
• Minimum of five years of professional experience in journalism, editorial writing, communications, publishing, or a related field.
• Strong reporting, interviewing, research, writing, editing, and analytical skills.
• Familiarity with AP style and digital publishing.
• Ability to manage multiple assignments and meet deadlines.
• Experience with video, photography, multimedia production, or visual storytelling is preferred.
• Experience in higher education, nonprofit, or mission-driven organizations is preferred.

Responsibilities

• Research, interview, write, and revise stories for Howard Magazine, The Dig, newsletters, and other publications.
• Produce accurate and engaging content for print, web, email, social media, and multimedia audiences.
• Translate complex information into clear, compelling narratives highlighting University impact.
• Coordinate with photography, design, and multimedia teams for integrated content.
• Assist with editorial calendars, production schedules, and deadline-driven workflows.
• Draft executive communications and institutional messages as needed.
• Maintain interviews notes, source materials, approvals, and production assets.
