Job summary

CompTIA is seeking an editorial professional to provide line editing, copyediting, proofreading, and QC for certification exam content. You will ensure accuracy, consistency, readability, and adherence to standards while maintaining exam integrity.

Chicago-style guidelines apply, and in-person workshops at the CompTIA HQ occur periodically. Chicago-based candidates are preferred, with roughly one week in-office per month.

Qualifications

  • Degree preferred but not required for the role.
  • 1+ years' experience in a technical line editing, copyediting, or proofreading role.

Responsibilities

  • Copyedit, line edit, proofread, and perform QC reviews of exam items and related content/media.
  • Adhere to the editorial workflow and complete all QC and editorial reviews by deadlines.
  • Screen content for discriminatory language and edit for readability and plain language.
  • Apply house style guidelines and Chicago Manual of Style during edits.
  • Escalate and resolve issues encountered during editorial/QC reviews.
  • Evaluate editorial workflows and implement approved improvements.
  • Manage editorial workflow for assigned products, prioritizing tasks and resolving issues.
  • Assist with additional editorial, administrative, and communication tasks.
  • Facilitate item review sessions with subject matter experts (in-person at CompTIA HQ).

Scope Summary:

Provide editorial support as part of the CompTIA Exam Services team by line editing, copyediting, proofreading, and performing quality control (QC) reviews for certification exam content. Apply professional judgment to ensure content accuracy, consistency, clarity, and adherence to editorial standards while identifying opportunities to improve content quality and editorial processes.

Note - Chicago based candidates preferred as you will come into the office approximately one week out of the month.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Copyedit, line edit, proofread, and perform QC reviews of exam items and related content/media at multiple stages of the exam development process.
  • Adhere to the editorial workflow and complete all QC and editorial reviews by the assigned deadlines.
  • Screen all content for language that may be perceived as discriminatory or offensive and edit with an eye for readability and plain language.
  • Recommend edits by applying expert editorial judgment and standard rules for grammar, while applying knowledge based on house style guidelines and The Chicago Manual of Style.
  • Proactively address and resolve issues that surface during editorial/QC reviews, escalated as appropriate, and work with the team to make decisions.
  • Independently evaluate editorial processes and workflows, exercise professional judgment in identifying opportunities for improvement, and implement approved changes that enhance quality, efficiency, consistency, and exam integrity.
  • Manage and make independent decisions regarding the editorial and quality control workflow for assigned certification products, including prioritization, issue resolution, and workflow enhancements.
  • Assist with other editorial, administrative, and communication-related tasks as needed to support the goals and objectives of the Exam Services team.
  • Participate in virtual and in-person exam development workshops by facilitating item review sessions with subject matter experts as assigned. (In-person workshops will be held at the CompTIA HQ office.).
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Key Performance Indicators:
  • Complete at least 95% of assigned editorial and QC reviews by the established deadlines while following the required editorial workflow.
  • Accurately edit exam items and other exam-related content to meet established quality, style, readability, and accessibility standards while enhancing clarity.
  • Identify, document, and communicate significant issues discovered during editorial and QC reviews, and collaborate with appropriate team members to make decisions.
  • Effectively facilitate assigned item review sessions with subject matter experts.
  • Propose at least one actionable editorial process or documentation improvement annually.

Skills and Qualifications:
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both verbally and in writing, with team members and subject matter experts.

  • Self-starter with strong Initiative, curiosity, and an interest in learning and growing within the role.

  • Proficiency in applying The Chicago Manual of Style, working with house style guidelines, and creating project style sheets.
  • Proven track record of managing time efficiently, keeping multiple assignments moving along concurrently, and delivering assigned work on time.
  • Experience editing IT-related or other technical content is strongly preferred.
  • Intermediate-to-advanced skills using Microsoft products, Adobe Pro, Adobe InDesign, and Smartsheet are preferred.
  • Knowledge of exam development best practices is a plus, as are strong facilitation skills.
Education and/or Experience:
  • Degree preferred but not required for the role.
  • 1+ years' experience in a technical line editing, copyediting, or proofreading role.
