Job summary

Portland magazine, University of Portland’s award-winning alumni publication, seeks an editorial assistant for the Fall 2026 semester. This internship offers hands-on experience in narrative journalism, storytelling, and magazine editing, with exposure to both print and online content.

You will develop researching, reporting, interviewing, writing, and editing skills while exploring voice, narrative structure, audience, and multi-channel deployment strategies.

Qualifications

• Excellent writing, editing, and proofreading skills.
• A demonstrated curiosity about UP and an interest in covering a variety of stories.
• Detail oriented, organized, and deadline focused, with an ability to work independently on assigned stories.
• Must be comfortable interviewing people in many different situations.
• Must have an openness to collaboration and feedback.

Responsibilities

• Interviewing students, alumni, faculty, or staff for stories for Portland magazine’s storytelling channels.
• Organizing, researching, and writing the Class Notes/In Memoriam sections, with a potential opportunity to write short alumni profiles.
• Updating magazine archives and sending magazines and correspondence to readers and community members.
• Proofreading.
• Writing headlines, subheads, and social media posts.
• Assisting with occasional in-person events, as schedules allow.
• Other relevant duties as assigned.
