Job summary

Sage is seeking a Software Engineering Intern for the Edge team in New York, NY. You will work on the boundary between on-premise devices and cloud infrastructure, shipping production code and learning how a large IoT system operates at scale.

You will be paired with a senior engineer as a mentor and contribute to projects like fleet diagnostic tooling, device telemetry pipelines, or automation that reduces manual work.

Qualifications

• Pursuing a degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field.
• Solid programming fundamentals in Java, Python, or another OO language, with willingness to work in Java.
• Familiarity with Linux and comfort in a terminal.
• Curiosity about how software meets hardware: networking, radios, embedded systems, or IoT (coursework and personal projects count).
• Bias toward tinkering: you've taken something apart, built something scrappy, or debugged something the hard way.
• Clear communication and eagerness to ask questions.

Responsibilities

• Design, build, and ship a summer project that solves a real problem for the Edge team, with guidance from your mentor.
• Write backend services in Java that interact with a fleet of thousands of on-premise devices.
• Work with Linux-based edge devices: flashing, configuring, debugging, and learning how software behaves when the network is unreliable.
• Build tooling that improves fleet observability and helps the team remotely diagnose hardware and connectivity issues.
• Participate in code reviews and design discussions alongside the full engineering team.
• Learn how a production IoT system spanning LoRaWAN, BLE, and cloud services actually operates at scale.
