Job summary

Cloudflare is seeking an engineer to design, build, and operate the high-performance cache and proxy data plane at the edge. You will contribute to Pingora and related production services, improving asynchronous I/O, latency, and resilience across a globally distributed network.

The role requires 4+ years of production software experience, strong backend language skills (Rust preferred), and a solid grasp of HTTP, TCP/TLS/QUIC, and distributed systems.

Qualifications

• Minimum 4 years designing, building, and operating production software systems.
• Proficiency in at least one backend language such as Rust, Go, C, or C++ with willingness to work in Rust.
• Strong understanding of HTTP semantics and transport protocols (TCP, TLS, QUIC).

Responsibilities

• Design, build, and operate the high-performance cache and proxy data plane at Cloudflare's edge.
• Contribute to Pingora production services, improving async I/O and tail latency.
• Improve cache correctness and performance via placement, eviction, and range-request handling.
• Build globally distributed purge and Tiered Cache systems to reduce origin load.
• Deliver APIs and rules for cache keys, TTLs, purge behaviors and Workers access.
• Own features end to end from design to tests, rollout, and production operations.
• Participate in on-call rotation, incident response, and post-mortems to boost reliability.
• Assess failure modes with guardrails and rollback mechanisms for safe high-impact changes.
• Collaborate with product and engineering teams across Cloudflare to extend the cache/proxy platform.
• Lead code reviews and raise engineering standards and tooling.
