Job summary

The Y in Central Maryland is seeking a Special Education Consultant to help ensure Head Start and Early Head Start children with developmental delays are welcomed, included, and supported.

You will conduct classroom observations, provide assessment support, referrals, training, and collaborate with families and classroom teams to tailor strategies that promote participation, belonging, and thriving.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in special education or related field.
• At least two years of relevant experience supporting young children with disabilities.
• Experience participating in special education referrals, evaluations, or service delivery.
• Knowledge of IEPs, IFSPs, inclusive practices, and accommodations.
• Experience reviewing educational information and providing practical recommendations.
• Strong communication, organization, collaboration, documentation, and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to travel regularly among assigned program sites and partner locations.
• Ability to obtain and maintain required background clearances and certifications.

Responsibilities

• Conduct classroom observations and review screenings, evaluations, progress reports, IEPs, IFSPs, and other records.
• Identify strengths and needs; recommend strategies to support development, participation, independence, and belonging.
• Observe children with suspected concerns after required authorization.
• Prepare and submit required reports for educational assessments.
• Coordinate referrals for special education, early intervention, therapy, and related supports with families and partners.
• Assist families in accessing evaluations, services, resources, and follow-up support.
• Implement IEP/IFSP goals and accommodations with classroom teams.
