Job summary

Chicago Public Schools is seeking a Special Education Classroom Assistant in Chicago. The role involves supporting Special Education teachers, providing one-on-one tutoring and personal hygiene assistance, and helping students with daily living skills and use of assistive devices.

You will work under supervision, accompany students on field trips, and assist with notes and behavior records. CPR training is highly desirable and ongoing training is offered.

Qualifications

• Valid ISBE paraprofessional license or 60 college credits with paraprofessional exam.
• Good knowledge of the characteristics of students with various disabilities.
• Good knowledge of English grammar, spelling and basic mathematics.
• Ability to work with students with disabilities and follow written and oral instructions.
• CPR training is highly desirable and may be required.

Responsibilities

• Assist Special Education teachers in reinforcing learning for students with disabilities.
• Provide one-on-one tutoring and personal hygiene support as needed.
• Assist with daily living skills and use of assistive devices.
• Accompany students on field trips and to swimming pools/clinics.
• Take notes in class and help maintain behavior records.
• Attend workshops and in-service training to update job related skills.

Education

60 semester hours of college credit

Paraprofessional license (ISBE)

Ability to work with students with disabilities

Good knowledge of English grammar and spelling

Good knowledge of basic mathematics
