Job summary

City of Arroyo Grande seeks a Battalion Chief to oversee fire and emergency response on a 48-hour shift. This pivotal role is one of three Duty Chiefs managing operations, training, prevention, and emergency planning, with authority to act as Fire Chief in their absence.

Leads personnel, budgets, and program development while coordinating with internal teams and outside agencies to ensure readiness and effective service delivery.

Qualifications

• Seven years of increasing responsibility as a full-time firefighter or higher, with at least four years at Captain level or above for external candidates.
• Experience leading emergency operations, training programs, and prevention initiatives.
• Knowledge of budgets, purchasing, and inventory related to fire services.
• Familiarity with incident command, ICS-400, and fire service administrative practices.

Responsibilities

• Act as Duty Chief and assume incident command as needed.
• Direct shift operations, training, and maintenance for readiness.
• Oversee department budgets and staffing levels.
• Coordinate cross-departmental and external agency collaboration.
• Develop and supervise training, drills, and public education programs.
