Job summary

The City of Berkeley, CA invites applications for the Deputy Fire Chief position in the Fire Department. This senior role leads one of two major divisions within the Department, either Operations or Administrative/Support, with responsibilities spanning emergency operations, EMS, training, and logistics.

Overall duties include setting priorities, overseeing promotional processes, ensuring readiness of apparatus, and maintaining strong interagency relationships.

Qualifications

• Possession of a B.A. or B.S. degree from an accredited college or university and the equivalent of one (1) year of full-time experience as a chief officer in a paid fire department.
• Substitution for a Bachelor's degree is the possession of an A.A. or A.S. degree from an accredited college or university with the California State Fire Training (CSFT) Chief Officer Certification.
• Other requirements include the ability to travel to various locations within and outside the City of Berkeley to meet the program needs and to fulfill the job responsibilities. When driving on City business, the incumbent is required to maintain a valid California Class C or higher driver's license as well as a satisfactory driving record. Must be willing to be subject to off hours call-in for major emergency response. Must be physically fit to participate in emergency response if needed.

Responsibilities

• Establishing priorities and performance expectations for assigned divisions; overseeing firefighter and single-function paramedic recruit academies and Department-wide training; coordinating promotional development and examination processes; providing executive oversight of first responder and ambulance transport programs, including quality assurance and improvement activities.
• Overseeing the maintenance, replacement, and readiness of major fire apparatus and other operational resources.
• Developing effective working relationships with Battalion Chiefs, division managers, labor and City partners, and regional public safety agencies; promoting operational readiness, consistency, accountability, and continuous improvement throughout the Department.
