Job summary

Broken Arrow Public Schools seeks a Driver Trainer to oversee and provide training for all new bus drivers. You will assist managers with ongoing staff development and maintain records required by state and federal DOTs.

The role requires extensive coaching, safety program management, and collaboration with the Transportation team to ensure student safety across routes.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • 5 years experience in ground transportation; 3 years in school bus ops preferred.
  • Willing to obtain DOT/ CDL/ school bus/instructional certifications.
  • Computer literacy with word-processing and spreadsheets.
  • Excellent interpersonal and written/verbal communication skills.

Responsibilities

  • Implements and directs the Transportation Department Safety Program, including ongoing driver and safety training and conferences.
  • Recruits and trains qualified school bus drivers and teaches Oklahoma DOE certification classes.
  • Works with Routing Coordinator to ensure safe bus stops and conducts driver surveillance for student safety.
  • Responsible for Driver Safety Program.
  • Abides by district safety standards and procedures.
  • Performs duties as requested by the Executive Director of Transportation or designee.

JOB TITLE: Driver Trainer
DEPARTMENT: Transportation
REPORTS TO: Executive Director of Transportation
FLSA STATUS: Non-Exempt
EMPLOYMENT STATUS: Full Time 12 Month
MINIMUM JOB REQUIREMENTS:

Education: High School Diploma or GED Preferred

Experience: 5 years of experience working in the ground transportation industry preferred; at least 3 years of experience in school bus transportation. Preferred or willing to obtain State and DOT Driver Safety Certification, CDL, School Bus Certification and/or Instructional Certification.

Skills: Computer literacy with word-processing and spreadsheets. Excellent interpersonal skills, well-developed written and verbal communication

skills. Basic math skills and detail orientation. Mapping and routing skills.

Ability to lead group instruction. Knowledge of adult teaching techniques. Must meet the state and federal guidelines for and obtain instructor certification.

SUMMARY:

Oversees and provides the training of all new bus drivers. Responsible for helping Managers with ongoing staff development of all drivers. Maintains all records required by the state and federal DOTs.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  2. Recruits and trains qualified school bus drivers and teaches Oklahoma Department of Education Certification classes for driver trainees.
  3. Works with Routing Coordinator to insure safe bus stops and conducts periodic driver surveillance to insure student safety.
  4. Responsible for Driver Safety Program.
  5. Abides by district safety standards and procedures.
  6. Performs duties and responsibilities as requested by the Executive Director of Transportation or designee.
ESSENTIAL BEHAVIOR:

Ability to use sound judgment in any situation. Ability to deal successfully and rapidly with changes in assignments and properly respond to applicable correspondence/communication received. Ability to project a professional company image through in-person, phone, and electronic interaction. Ability to build and foster harmonious rapport and work cooperatively with District staff and the public while achieving the objectives and goals of the position. Ability to handle problematic and/or difficult situations professionally by communicating with the appropriate person.

ATTENDANCE STATEMENT:

Able to be in attendance for assigned responsibilities with 95% attendance.

ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:

Exposure to extremes of heat and cold. Possible exposure to bodily fluids.

PHYSICAL STANDARDS:
  • Ability to manipulate objects of up to 50 lbs for 20 feet is required
  • Walking as required to access equipment and perform responsibilities
  • Sitting for length of assigned route
  • Use of hands and arms to assist with wheelchairs, setting brakes, foot pedals, etc.
  • Climbing and descending bus steps
  • Stooping, kneeling, and crouching as required for student care
  • Talking and hearing as to communicate concerning job-related duties as assigned
  • Close vision (clear vision at 20 inches or less) with or without correction
  • Distance vision (clear vision at 20 feet or more) with or without correction
  • Color vision (ability to identify and distinguish colors)
  • Peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus
  • Must pass DOT physical and Drug Screening
