Job summary

Great Bend Unified School District 428 is seeking a School Bus Driver to provide safe and reliable transportation for students, under the supervision of the Director of Transportation. You will maintain student discipline, follow district policies, and report any maintenance needs for district buses.

The role requires a valid CDL with endorsements, completion of behind-the-wheel training, and First Aid certification.

Qualifications

Job description

School Bus Driver
Position Function:

Under the direct supervision of the Director of Transportation, transporting personnel while maintaining discipline and adhering to district policies.

General Responsibilities:
  • Maintain student discipline
  • Adhere to district policies at all times.
  • Keep abreast of new information, innovative ideas, and techniques.
  • Adhere to all district health and safety policies, including all precautions of the Bloodborne Pathogens Exposure Control Plan.
  • Desire to continue career improvement.
  • Communicate effectively with all members of the school district and community.
  • React productively to change; accept other tasks, as assigned.
  • Appropriately operate all vehicles and equipment, as necessary.
  • Support the philosophy and mission of the district.
  • Assist the mechanic with maintenance and repair, as needed.
  • Support the value of an education.
  • Maintain the bus in clean condition, and inform the Director of Transportation whenever a bus is received in unsatisfactory condition.
  • Inform the Director of Transportation of routine maintenance and repairs required.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Director of Transportation.
Essential Functions:
  • Abide by all traffic laws.
  • Provide clean, safe, and reliable transportation to ensure that students enjoy the full advantage of school-district programs and activities.
  • Ensure that all activities conform to state school transportation guidelines.
  • Abide by all Kansas school transportation regulations.
  • Provide safe and orderly transportation to and from school and school-related activities.
  • Maintain assigned schedule.
  • Transport only authorized students.
  • Discharge students only at authorized stops.
  • Inspect bus prior to each route or activity trip, and file inspection forms with the Director of Transportation.
  • Immediately notify the Director of Transportation of lateness or emergency mechanical failure.
  • Report all accidents, and file required accident reports with the Director of Transportation in a timely manner.

Physical and Mental Demands, Work Hazards
  • Successfully complete agility and reaction time tests, if required.
  • Have agility necessary to quickly and safely Exit the driver's seat and emergency doors.
  • Must work indoors and outdoors year around.
  • Requires climbing and balancing.
  • Requires prolonged sitting and/or standing.
  • Requires physical exertion to manually move, lift, carry, pull, or push heavy objects or materials.
  • Requires stooping, kneeling, crawling, bending, turning, and reaching.
  • Must work in noisy, crowded, stressful environments.
  • Must work in and around dust, fumes, and odors.
  • Requires lengthy and overnight travel.
Qualifications Profile:
  • Hold a valid CDL license with the required endorsements.
  • Meet all state requirements for bus drivers, including Defensive Driving and First Aid certification.
  • Successfully complete behind-the-wheel training.
  • Complete required physical examination for bus drivers.
  • Perform required driving skills, including operation of a vehicle at night.
