Job description

Essential duties of this position include the following. Employees in this position perform some or all of the following tasks. Other duties may be assigned. Salary is based on experience.

Summary

Responsible for the overall leadership and management of the district's transportation department, including student transportation, routing, scheduling, regulatory compliance, fleet maintenance, and transportation personnel. Plans, coordinates, and personally performs preventive maintenance, diagnostics, and mechanical repairs on the district's fleet of diesel- and gasoline-powered buses, activity buses, vans, cars, trucks, and other district equipment. Determines when repairs should be completed in-house and when specialized work should be outsourced. Works collaboratively with students, parents, staff, administrators, and the public to ensure safe, reliable, and efficient transportation services.

Qualifications / Education

1. High school diploma or G.E.D.

2. Health and inoculation certificate on file in the central office after an employment offer is made.

3. Completion of the state-required physical examination for bus drivers after an employment offer is made.

4. Valid Kansas commercial driver's license (CDL) with all required endorsements.

5. Meets all state requirements for school bus drivers, including defensive driving, CPR, and first aid certification.

6. At least one year of experience operating a motor vehicle, including experience during all four seasons.

7. Successful completion of behind-the-wheel training.

8. Desire to continue professional growth through enhanced skills and job performance.

9. Ability to pass initial and random alcohol and controlled-substance testing.

10. Ability to communicate and work effectively and cooperatively with members of the school district and community.

Preferred Qualifications

Progressively responsible experience in school transportation, fleet management, or commercial vehicle maintenance.

Significant hands-on experience diagnosing, maintaining, and repairing diesel-powered buses or other medium- and heavyduty vehicles.

ASE Medium/Heavy Truck certification, Kansas school bus inspector certification, or the ability to obtain relevant certification within a district-established period.

Experience supervising employees and coordinating transportation operations.

Experience using computerized diagnostic equipment and fleet maintenance or work-order software.

Experience with air brakes, hydraulics, electrical systems, HVAC systems, welding, emissions systems, and preventive maintenance programs.

Physical Requirements / Environmental Conditions

11. Requires prolonged sitting, standing, walking, bending, kneeling, reaching, climbing, and working beneath or around vehicles.

12. Requires driving skills, including the ability to operate vehicles at night and during adverse weather conditions.

13. Requires quick reflexes, sound judgment, and the ability to respond appropriately in emergency situations. 14. Ability to regularly lift and carry up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift or move heavier vehicle parts with assistance
