Job summary

Hancock Lumber in Augusta, ME is hiring a Delivery Truck Driver to transport building materials to job sites and customers. You will ensure on-time, safe deliveries and maintain compliance with safety standards and company policies.

Requirements include a High School Diploma or GED, a valid operator’s license, a DOT medical card, and at least 3 months of truck driving experience with a 6-ton capacity or greater.

SUPERVISES : N/A

CLASSIFICATION: Non-Exempt

POSITION SUMMARY:

Responsible for operating a delivery truck to transport building materials and related items to and from designated locations, as directed by the Logistics Manager. Ensures timely, safe, and accurate deliveries while maintaining compliance with company policies and safety standards.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Take personal responsibility for your own safety and the safety of those around you.
  • Participate in safety huddles and utilize the Safety Observation System (SOS).
  • Promptly report unsafe conditions and behaviors.
  • Use required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) at all times and in designated areas.
  • Support accurate and timely deliveries to meet OTIF (On-Time In-Full) standards.
  • Truck Loading and Unloading
  • Verify order accuracy.
  • Organize and secure materials safely.
  • Obtain approval from the checker for product type, quantity, and condition before leaving the yard.
  • Material Delivery
  • Direct forklift operators during loading as needed.
  • Responsible for all company funds, including COD.
  • Assess site conditions, weather, and equipment to determine the safest delivery approach.
  • Follow instructions from supervisors and service coordinators.
  • Administrative Duties
  • Conduct daily equipment inspections.
  • Monitor truck performance and report issues promptly.
  • Complete all required documentation, including:
  • Driver’s log
  • Vehicle maintenance log
  • Mileage reports
  • Delivery tickets
  • Credit memos
  • Handle credit pickups properly: leave a copy at the job site and submit a copy to the shipper.
  • Maintain cleanliness of the truck interior and exterior (washed and waxed).
  • Report vehicle maintenance needs promptly.
  • Represent the company professionally and reliably in all customer interactions.

  • Adhere to all company policies and procedures without exception.
  • Always wear a seatbelt while operating the vehicle.
  • Wear company-approved clothing/uniform.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to meet operational needs.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
  • Driving Record Requirements
  • No moving traffic violations within the 12 months prior to hire.
  • Motor Vehicle Report (MVR) must show zero points at time of hire.
  • Employees with up to 6 points or demerits may operate a company vehicle.
  • Employees exceeding 6 points will be removed from driving duties. At that point, Hancock Lumber reserves the right to reassign or terminate employment.
  • Ability to perform basic arithmetic, read and interpret delivery orders, written instructions, and complete required forms accurately.
  • Communicate effectively with customers, coworkers, and supervisors using verbal and written methods.
  • Demonstrates professionalism and courtesy in all interactions.
  • Knowledge of and ability to use safe lifting techniques.
DESIRED EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:
  • Education:
  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Experience:
  • Minimum of 3 months experience operating a truck with a 6-ton capacity or greater.
  • Licensing & Certifications:
  • Valid operator’s license.
  • Must be insurable under company vehicle policies.
  • Class A & B drivers must be registered with Clearinghouse.
  • Possession of a valid DOT Medical Card.
REPETITIVE PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
  • Lift 80# from floor to waist, lift 60# from waist to shoulder.
  • Carry 80# over a distance exceeding 12 feet.
  • Push 100# in a wheeled cart.
  • Bend, stoop or squat to floor level repeatedly.
  • Reach over head to grasp materials.
  • Work outside in temperatures ranging from extreme heat to extreme cold.
  • Work with mechanical equipment on a daily basis.
  • Be able to shovel snow.
