Job summary

The State of Iowa invites you to join the Driver & Identification Service Center as a Consultant, helping Iowa motorists through licensing and driving tests. You’ll verify identities, apply REAL ID rules, and support a team dedicated to safety and service excellence.

You’ll interact with the public to issue licenses and IDs, administer examinations, and ensure accuracy by reviewing records. Training and certifications are provided after hire, with opportunities for growth within Iowa DOT.

Qualifications

• Before Hire: valid, unrestricted driver's license (operator's) and must pass background checks.
• After Hire: must obtain AAMVA certifications and attend Motorcycle Rider Education Safety course.
• Training provided upon hiring.

Responsibilities

• Support the supervisor with daily team coordination and workflow efficiency.
• Serve as a key customer contact by answering questions, issuing licenses/IDs, and conducting drive tests.
• Verify identity and issue credentials per eligibility, licensing standards, and REAL ID rules.
• Administer and score driving examinations (motorcycle, car, truck, passenger, and CDL tests).
• Review state and federal records to determine issuance decisions and conduct re-examinations.
• Assist and strengthen the team through training, mentoring, and sharing procedural expertise.

Education

Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university

Four years of public administration experience or equivalent

Equivalent combination of education/experience

Experience in Motor Vehicle Division or state government
