The State of Iowa is seeking a Driver & Identification Service Center Consultant to guide customers through licensing, administer drive tests, and apply REAL ID rules. You will help verify identities, issue credentials, and support the team with training and process improvements.

Qualifications

• Must possess and maintain a valid, unrestricted driver’s license (operator’s license) with no major restrictions.
• Background checks required: name-based and fingerprint checks.
• Post-hire certifications: AA MV certifications and Motorcycle Rider Education Safety course.

Responsibilities

• Guide customers through the licensing process and issue licenses/IDs.
• Conduct drive tests for motorcycle, car, truck, passenger, and CDL.
• Verify identity and eligibility using REAL ID rules and licensing standards.
• Review records to determine issuance decisions and conduct re-examinations.
• Assist and mentor the team with training and sharing procedural expertise.

As a Service Center Consultant, you’ll guide customers through the licensing process, conduct drive tests, and serve as a trusted resource for both the public and your team through the following responsibilities:

• Support the supervisor with daily team coordination and workflow efficiency.
• Serve as a key customer contact by answering questions, issuing licenses/IDs, and conducting drive tests.
• Apply expert knowledge of eligibility requirements, licensing standards, and REAL ID rules to verify identity and issue credentials.
• Administer and score all driving examinations including motorcycle, car, truck, passenger, and CDL pre-trip, skills, and road tests.
• Review state and federal records to determine issuance decisions and conduct required re-examinations.
• Assist and strengthen the team through training, mentoring, and sharing procedural expertise.

Work Conditions

When administering drive tests, you’ll be exposed to all weather elements and driving skill levels for an extended period. Rain and winter clothing will be provided.

Hours

Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM; Occasional in-state travel will be expected, along with reporting to various locations as needed.

Requirements

• Before Hire: Must possess and maintain a valid, unrestricted, except for corrective lenses, and driver's license (minimum of an operator's license) and must pass federal and local name-based and Fingerprint criminal history background checks.
• After Hire: Must obtain and maintain required American Association of Motor Vehicle Administrator certifications, must attend a Motorcycle Rider Education Safety course, and attend department training sessions as required. Training classes and time will be provided upon hiring.

• Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university.
• Four years of full-time work experience in public administration (e.g., public sector clerical or managerial work, program oversight, strategic planning, auditing, or law enforcement).
• A total of four years of education and/or full-time experience (as described in number two), where thirty semester hours of accredited college or university coursework in any field equals one year of full-time experience.
• Current, continuous experience in the state executive branch that includes experience equal to two years of full-time work within the Motor Vehicle Division of the Iowa Department of Transportation.
