Job Summary
The Dredge Operator operates the dredge in a safe and efficient manner and uses acquired skills to dredge sand from pond-filled pits. This job interfaces daily with the rest of the operations at this location. The employee must perform work activities correctly, accurately, and timely.
Job Responsibilities
- Become familiar with assigned equipment, recognize potential maintenance issues by sight and sound, and inform supervisory personnel.
- Carry out minor repairs and adjustments.
- Assist maintenance personnel with repairs and preventive maintenance.
- Ensure dredge has an adequate supply of tools, fire extinguishers, first aid supplies, and safety equipment.
- Correctly change or repair various teeth from cutter heads.
- Be familiar with proper procedures for moving the dredge and mining operations.
- Familiarize with necessary lubrication of moving parts on the dredge.
- Operate a workboat with motor safely and efficiently.
- Operate under training from lead man, loader operator, and supervisor for smooth and safe production.
- Operate controls and levers to hoist, drag, swing, and operate cutter head for efficient productivity.
- Perform welding as needed to address breakdowns.
- Work under the direction of Leadman and Manager.
- Maintain good housekeeping of equipment.
- Assist or replace other workers as needed or directed.
- Adhere to all CEMEX, OSHA, and MSHA rules and regulations at all times.
- Wear proper safety equipment while on plant grounds.
- Meet or exceed company safety standards.
- Perform other responsibilities as assigned by management.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Prior experience with similar equipment or machinery.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Experience with similar equipment or machinery.
- Ability to follow simple and complex instructions and solve problems based on experience.
- Mechanical aptitude.
- Ability to work in all weather conditions.
- Basic logging and documentation skills.
- Proficiency in English reading and comprehension of manuals, regulations, and reports.
- Ability to communicate via two-way radio.
- Basic mechanical knowledge to detect equipment breakdowns.
- Ability to identify safety hazards and malfunctions and respond appropriately.
- Familiarity with company practices and federal safety regulations.
- Good communication with supervisors, maintenance personnel, and contractors.
- High attentiveness and physical coordination for safe and productive work.
- Ability to work night shifts (12 hours per day, 4 nights per week, 5 pm - 5 am).
Working Conditions
- Ability to work extended hours as needed.
- Exposure to extreme heat, cold, noise, and outdoor conditions.
- Must wear protective equipment on site.
Physical Requirements
- Perform activities including walking, sitting, lifting, pushing, pulling, climbing, and operating controls.
- Lift up to 100 pounds occasionally, 50 pounds frequently, and 20 pounds constantly.
- Regularly communicate verbally and hear to ensure safety and coordination.
- Pass DOT physical, including back x-ray, hearing test, and drug/alcohol screening.
