The Village of Downers Grove is seeking a Public Works Technician I to locate and verify storm sewers, water mains, and utilities in the field. You will support GIS maps and atlas data, and assist residents with information requests.

Requirements include a high school diploma or equivalent; a two-year technical degree is preferred. A valid Illinois Class B CDL with air brakes is required. The role includes on-call duties and participation in snow/ice removal and emergency response.

Public Works Technician I

The Village of Downers Grove is seeking a Public Works Technician I position. This position performs skilled and unskilled work, including reading and interpreting utility atlas maps and physically locating Village-owned utilities in the field. A successful candidate will be skilled in reading and interpreting plans and blueprints and will be able to research, compile, and summarize a variety of informational and statistical data and materials.

Major Duties and Functions

• Conducts field inspections to locate and verify the locations of storm sewer pipes, water mains, traffic signal conduit, street light conduit, and Village-owned fiber optic lines
• Provides data for the maintenance of storm sewer and water main atlas maps for GIS applications
• Assists the public with requests for information
• Serves as backup and/or after-hours on-call rotation for J.U.L.I.E. locate requests
• Assists in activities related to snow and ice removal, special events, and emergency situations as needed
• Other related duties as required

Education and Experience

High school diploma or equivalent required. Two year technical or college degree in Surveying, Engineering Technology, or related field preferred. Two years of related work experience or any combination of education and experience that produces the required knowledge, skills, and abilities preferred.

Licenses and Certifications

Possession of a valid Illinois class B commercial driver's license (CDL) with air brakes.

Salary and Benefits

Starting wages for this position are $56,374, increasing to $80,535 following six years of service. This full-time, non-exempt position is in the International Union of Operating Engineers, Local 150, Public Employees Division. The Village provides an excellent benefits package, including health, dental, and vision insurance, as well as participation in the Illinois Municipal Retirement Fund (IMRF).
