Job summary

The Salvation Army North & Central Illinois Division in Waukegan, IL is seeking a full-time driver for our thrift store operations. The role handles local pickups and deliveries, maintaining DOT-compliant safety and vehicle inspections, with an hourly pay rate of $18.00-$20.00.

You will be the face of The Salvation Army to donors, follow routing procedures, use the DSS program on an iPad, and support store operations while assisting in loading, unloading, and mentoring participants in work

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or equivalent.
• Two years licensed driving experience required.
• Must pass pre-employment DOT screen, drug test, and background check.

Responsibilities

• Follow scheduled routing procedures and drive Salvation Army truck for pickups and deliveries.
• Perform daily pre- and post-trip inspections and ensure vehicle safety and maintenance.
• Represent The Salvation Army courteously to donors and communicate donation acceptance policies.
• Use DSS program and assigned iPad apps to support operations and reporting.
• Assist with loading/unloading of trucks and mentor beneficiaries in work therapy goals.

About The Role

At The Salvation Army Thrift Store, your work helps turn donations into funding for programs that support people in our community. We're seeking a professional and courteous driver to transport materials to and from specified destinations. This role is essential in representing The Salvation Army while providing exceptional service to our donors and maintaining efficient operations.

Location: Waukegan, IL

Pay Rate: $18.00-$20.00 per hour

Status: Full-time

Shift: 7:30 AM- 4:00 PM

• Must be able to obtain Non-CDL Class C*

Key Responsibilities

Transportation & Logistics

• Follow scheduled routing procedures efficiently
• Drive Salvation Army truck for pickups and deliveries
• Ensure security and safe handling of all goods and materials
• Perform daily pre and post-trip inspections of vehicles
• Maintain equipment in excellent working order
• Comply with all DOT and OSHA regulations

Customer Service

• Act as a personal representative of The Salvation Army
• Ensure all donors are treated courteously and respectfully
• Communicate donation acceptance policy with donors
• Report any pickup problems to dispatcher
• Maintain professional appearance per ARC dress code

Operations Support

• Use DSS program and assigned iPad apps effectively
• Support beneficiaries in work therapy goals through training and mentoring
• Handle loading and unloading of trucks as needed
• Wear all assigned PPE including gloves, masks, and back guard
• Report any safety or security concerns immediately

Qualifications

Education & Experience

• High School Degree or equivalent
• At least two years licensed driving experience
• Must pass pre-employment DOT screen, drug test, and background check

• Basic computer skills including payroll system
• Proficiency with mobile applications
• Basic math skills
• Excellent manual dexterity

Required Certifications

• Valid Driver's License
• Clear MVR report
• Successful completion of required testing

Physical Requirements

• Regularly required to stand, use hands, handle, feel, hear, and talk
• Frequently required to walk and reach with hands and arms
• Occasionally required to climb, balance, stoop, kneel, or crouch
• Must regularly lift/move up to 50 pounds
• Occasionally lift/move up to 100 pounds
• Specific vision abilities include close vision, distance vision, and focus adjustment
