Manager, Transportation

The Manager of Transportation will foster a culture focused on people, safety, service, and cost. They will engage meaningfully with drivers, provide best-in-class service to customers, and ensure safe and profitable operations. Using their transportation operations experience, they will manage personnel and drive efficient transportation operations, ensuring safe, accurate, and timely outbound shipments to customers and distribution centers.

This application is only available to active-duty service members eligible for a DoD SkillBridge Internship. The service member must be within the last 12 months of their active-duty contract. This is an unpaid, non-benefit eligible internship in partnership with the DoD SkillBridge program.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  1. Lead with a safety mindset, ensuring injury-free interactions for associates, customers, and the public. Promote safety procedures, processes, and training to maintain a safety-first culture.
  2. Oversee and develop drivers and transportation associates through coaching, training, problem resolution, and leading by example. Ensure all staff are trained in their duties, safety, and legal responsibilities.
  3. Discuss performance with senior managers and create development plans to address gaps.
  4. Encourage upward communication and motivate associates to meet department goals.
  5. Supervise the work and productivity of drivers and clerical staff, driving engagement and retention, and embodying US Foods values.
  6. Participate in hiring, review performance, coach on safety and service, and handle disciplinary actions.
  7. Monitor production goals, ensure accuracy, troubleshoot delivery issues, and ensure compliance with DOT regulations.
  8. Identify waste, improve processes for safety and efficiency.
  9. Conduct safety and driver meetings and oversee maintenance of driver qualification files.
  10. Investigate accidents, maintain records, analyze causes, and implement preventative measures.
  11. Schedule shifts using planning tools like Microsoft Excel.
  12. Perform other duties as assigned.
Supervision

Direct: Union and/or non-union drivers

Relationships

Internal: Transportation leaders, drivers, warehouse leaders, other departments

External: Customers

Work Environment

Time spent on the road and in trucks, exposed to noise and vibration; also time in an office working on a computer.

Minimum Qualifications

Experience in transportation/delivery or warehouse distribution (minimum 3 years), with at least 1 year overseeing a workforce. Driving experience is a plus.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Broad transportation operation knowledge, leadership skills, understanding of DOT and regulatory requirements, data interpretation, and basic computer skills.

Travel

Approximately 10%, primarily for meetings and training.

Education/Training

High school diploma or GED required; college degree preferred.

Physical Qualifications

Ability to perform activities such as driving, pushing/pulling, climbing, grasping, manipulating objects, and manual dexterity tasks.

Compensation

Based on experience, education, skills, location, and legal factors. Expected base salary range: $55,000 - $90,000.
