Manager, Transportation

The Manager, Transportation will foster a culture focused on people, safety, service, and cost through meaningful engagement with drivers, providing best-in-class service to customers, and ensuring safe and profitable operations. They will leverage their transportation operations experience to manage personnel and drive efficient transportation operations, ensuring safe, accurate, and timely outbound shipments to customers and other distribution centers.

This application is only available to active-duty service members eligible to participate in a DoD SkillBridge Internship. The service member must be within the last 12 months of their active-duty contract. This is an unpaid, non-benefit eligible internship position in partnership with the DoD SkillBridge program.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  1. Safety Leadership: Lead with a safety mindset, ensuring injury-free interactions for associates, customers, and the public. Promote safety procedures, processes, and training to maintain a safety-first culture.
  2. Team Development: Oversee and develop drivers and transportation associates through coaching, training, and performance discussions. Ensure all team members are trained in their duties and safety responsibilities.
  3. Performance Management: Discuss performance with senior managers, create improvement plans, and monitor progress.
  4. Communication and Motivation: Foster an environment of open communication and motivate staff to meet department goals.
  5. Supervision and Engagement: Supervise work and productivity, drive engagement, and uphold US Foods values.
  6. Hiring and Evaluation: Participate in hiring processes, review performance, and address disciplinary issues.
  7. Operational Oversight: Monitor production goals, troubleshoot delivery issues, ensure compliance with DOT regulations, and improve processes for safety and efficiency.
  8. Safety and Compliance: Conduct safety meetings, oversee maintenance of driver files, investigate accidents, and implement preventative measures.
  9. Scheduling: Effectively schedule shifts using planning tools like Microsoft Excel.
  10. Other duties: Perform additional tasks as assigned by the manager.
Supervision

Direct supervision of union and/or non-union drivers.

Relationships

Internal: Transportation leaders, drivers, warehouse staff, and other departments. External: Customers.

Work Environment

Time spent on the road and in trucks, exposure to noise and vibration; also time in an office working on a computer.

Minimum Qualifications
  • At least three years of experience in transportation, delivery, or warehouse distribution.
  • At least one year of supervisory experience.
  • Driving experience is a plus.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Broad knowledge of transportation operations.
  • Strong leadership and communication skills.
  • Understanding of DOT, OSHA, and inventory regulations.
  • Ability to interpret data and use basic computer applications.
Travel

Approximately 10%, mainly for meetings or training.

Education/Training

High school diploma or GED required; college degree preferred.

Physical Qualifications

Ability to perform activities such as driving, pushing/pulling, climbing, grasping, manipulating objects, and manual dexterity tasks.

Compensation ranges from $55,000 to $90,000 depending on experience, skills, location, and other factors as applicable by law.
