Manager, Transportation

The Manager, Transportation will foster a culture focused on people, safety, service, and cost by engaging with drivers, providing excellent service to customers, and ensuring safe and profitable operations. They will leverage their experience in transportation to manage personnel and drive efficient operations, ensuring safe, accurate, and timely outbound shipments to customers and distribution centers within the organization.

This application is only available to active-duty service members eligible for a DoD SkillBridge Internship. The service member must be within the last 12 months of their active-duty contract. This is an unpaid, non-benefit eligible internship in partnership with the DoD SkillBridge program.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  1. Safety Leadership: Promote a safety-first culture, ensuring injury-free interactions for associates, customers, and the public. Champion safety procedures, processes, and training.
  2. Team Development: Coach and develop drivers and transportation associates through training, performance discussions, and leading by example. Ensure all team members are trained on job duties, safety, and legal responsibilities.
  3. Performance Management: Discuss performance with senior managers, create improvement plans, and address gaps.
  4. Communication and Motivation: Foster open communication and motivate team members to meet department goals.
  5. Supervision: Oversee work and productivity of drivers and clerical staff, drive engagement, and uphold US Foods values.
  6. Team Building: Participate in hiring, review performance, coach, and address disciplinary issues.
  7. Operational Oversight: Monitor production, ensure accuracy, troubleshoot delivery issues, and ensure compliance with DOT regulations.
  8. Process Improvement: Identify waste, improve processes for safety and efficiency.
  9. Safety Meetings and Maintenance: Conduct safety meetings, oversee driver qualification files, and investigate accidents to prevent future incidents.
  10. Scheduling: Effectively schedule shifts using planning tools like Microsoft Excel.
  11. Additional Duties: Perform other tasks as assigned by the manager.
Supervision

Direct supervision of union and/or non-union drivers.

Relationships

Internal: Transportation leaders, drivers, warehouse leaders, internal customers (e.g., Sales).
External: Customers.

Work Environment

Primarily on the road, with time spent in trucks and an office. Exposure to noise and vibration levels higher than passenger vehicles.

Minimum Qualifications
  • At least three years of experience in transportation/delivery or warehouse distribution.
  • At least one year of supervising a workforce.
  • Driving experience is a plus.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Broad knowledge of transportation operations and procedures.
  • Strong leadership, communication, and development skills.
  • Understanding of DOT, OSHA, and inventory regulations.
  • Ability to interpret financial and operational data.
  • Basic computer skills (e.g., Microsoft Office).
Travel

Approximately 10% travel for meetings and training.

Education/Training

High school diploma or GED required; college degree preferred.

Physical Qualifications

Ability to perform activities such as driving, pushing/pulling, climbing, grasping, manipulating objects, and manual dexterity for specified durations.

Compensation

Range between $55,000 - $90,000, depending on experience, skills, location, and other factors.
