Manager, Transportation

The Manager of Transportation will foster a culture focused on people, safety, service, and cost. They will engage meaningfully with drivers, provide best-in-class service to customers, and ensure safe and profitable operations. Leveraging their transportation experience, they will manage personnel and drive efficient operations, ensuring the safe, accurate, and timely outbound shipments to customers and distribution centers.

This application is only available to active-duty service members eligible for a DoD SkillBridge Internship. The service member must be within the last 12 months of their active-duty contract. This is an unpaid, non-benefit internship in partnership with the DoD SkillBridge program.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  1. Lead with a safety mindset, ensuring injury-free interactions among associates, customers, and the public. Promote safety procedures, processes, and training to maintain a safety-first culture.
  2. Oversee and develop drivers and transportation associates through coaching, training, and leading by example. Ensure all team members are trained in their duties, safety, and legal responsibilities.
  3. Discuss performance with senior managers and create improvement plans for team members.
  4. Encourage open communication and motivate staff to meet department goals.
  5. Supervise work and productivity within the department, fostering engagement and embodying US Foods values.
  6. Participate in hiring, review performance, coach, and manage disciplinary actions for transportation staff.
  7. Monitor goals, ensure accuracy and customer satisfaction, and troubleshoot delivery issues. Ensure compliance with DOT regulations.
  8. Identify waste, improve processes for safety and efficiency, and conduct safety meetings.
  9. Oversee maintenance of driver qualification files and investigate accidents to prevent future incidents.
Additional Responsibilities
  • Schedule shifts using planning tools like Microsoft Excel.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Supervision and Relationships

Supervises union and/or non-union drivers. Collaborates with transportation leaders, drivers, warehouse staff, and external customers.

Work Environment

May spend significant time on the road, in trucks, exposed to noise and vibration, and also in an office environment.

Minimum Qualifications
  • At least three years in transportation/delivery or warehouse distribution.
  • At least one year overseeing a workforce.
  • Experience as a driver is a plus.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge of transportation operations, safety, and regulatory requirements.
  • Leadership, communication, and development skills.
  • Ability to interpret data and basic computer skills.
Travel

Approximately 10% travel required for meetings and training.

Education and Physical Requirements
  • High school diploma or GED; college degree preferred.
  • Physical ability to perform activities like driving, lifting, climbing, grasping, manipulating objects, and manual dexterity.
Compensation

Base salary ranges from $55,000 to $90,000, depending on experience, skills, location, and other factors.
