Manager, Transportation

The Manager, Transportation will foster a department culture focused on people, safety, service, and cost through meaningful engagement with drivers, providing best-in-class service to customers, and ensuring safe and profitable operations. They will leverage their transportation operations experience to manage personnel and drive efficient transportation activities, ensuring the safe, accurate, and timely outbound shipments to customers and other distribution centers within the organization.

This application is only available to active-duty service members eligible to participate in a DoD SkillBridge Internship. The service member must be within the last 12 months of their active-duty contract. This is an unpaid, non-benefit eligible internship position in partnership with the DoD SkillBridge program.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  1. Safety Leadership: Lead with a safety mindset to ensure injury-free environments for associates, customers, and the public. Promote safety procedures, processes, and training to maintain a safety-first culture in the Transportation department.
  2. Team Development: Oversee and develop drivers and transportation associates through coaching, training on policies and procedures, and leading by example. Ensure all team members are trained in job duties, safety, and legal responsibilities.
  3. Performance Management: Discuss performance with senior managers, create development plans, and address gaps. Review performance, coach on safety and service targets, and manage disciplinary actions.
  4. Communication and Motivation: Foster an environment that encourages upward communication and motivates staff to achieve department goals.
  5. Operations Oversight: Supervise work and productivity, monitor goals, troubleshoot delivery issues, ensure compliance with DOT regulations, and maintain accuracy and customer satisfaction.
  6. Process Improvement: Identify waste, improve processes for safety and efficiency, and conduct safety and driver meetings. Oversee maintenance of driver qualification files and investigate accidents to prevent future incidents.
  7. Scheduling: Effectively schedule shifts using planning tools like Microsoft Excel.
  8. Additional Duties: Perform other responsibilities as assigned by the manager.
Supervision

Direct supervision of union and/or non-union drivers.

Relationships

Internal: Transportation leaders, coworkers, drivers, warehouse leaders, internal departments (e.g., Sales).
External: Customers.

Work Environment

Primarily on the road, spending time in trucks with exposure to noise and vibration; also office work involving computer use.

Minimum Qualifications
  • At least three years of transportation/delivery or warehouse distribution experience.
  • Minimum of one year of supervisory experience.
  • Driving experience is a plus.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Broad knowledge of transportation operations.
  • Strong leadership, communication, and development skills.
  • Understanding of DOT, OSHA, and inventory regulations.
  • Ability to interpret financial and operational data.
  • Basic computer skills (Microsoft Office).
Travel

Approximately 10% travel required for meetings and training.

Education/Training

High school diploma or GED required; college degree preferred.

Physical Qualifications

Ability to perform activities such as driving vehicles, pushing/pulling, climbing, grasping, manipulating objects, and manual dexterity.

Compensation varies based on experience, skills, location, and other factors. The expected base salary range is $55,000 - $90,000.
