Job summary

Position Overview

The Illinois Department of Corrections is looking for a candidate to perform general carpentry work and carpentry functions throughout the facility and grounds. In addition, this position will guide and direct individuals in custody assigned to the carpenter crew, and maintain and clean carpenter shop and tools. Essential Functions

• Performs general carpentry work in the repair, maintenance, construction, and alteration of walls, doors, furniture, roofing, and other wooden articles or structures.
• Performs carpentry functions throughout the facility and grounds.
• Guides and directs individuals in custody assigned to the carpenter crew.
• Maintains and cleans carpenter shop and tools.
• Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.

Minimum Qualifications

• Requires knowledge, skill, and mental development equivalent to completion of four (4) years of high school.
• Requires completion of an approved apprenticeship program to qualify as a journey level carpenter.

Preferred Qualifications

• Prefers at least four (4) years of experience working with the tools, materials, methods and standard practices of the trade.
• Prefers at least four (4) years of experience using tools and machines of the trade.
• Prefers at least four (4) years of experience instructing and directing unskilled, beginner workers in the trade.
• Prefers at least four (4) years of experience making simple arithmetical computations and bulk estimates for materials needed.
• Prefers completion of current OSHA 10 training or higher.
