Job summary

ACT (African Communities Together) seeks a DMV Community Organizer to build a strong base of African immigrant communities across DC, MD, and VA. You will drive membership growth, leadership development, and advocacy for housing, immigrant rights, and civic participation.

Reporting to the DMV Chapter Director, you will collaborate with staff to advance campaigns, coordinate rapid response, and engage with community partners. Evening/weekend availability is required.

Qualifications

• At least two years prior experience as a community, labor, or political organizer in a non-profit setting.
• Experience developing members into leaders and grassroots strategies for social change.
• Proficiency in English; fluency in an African language or Amharic is desirable.
• Cultural competence and experience with African immigrant communities or social justice.
• Strong digital literacy including Google Docs, Sheets, and Gmail.

Responsibilities

• Base-building through regular community outreach on housing, tenants’ rights, and immigrant issues.
• Campaigns: mobilize communities, conduct phone banking, and coordinate with media for outreach.
• Membership: recruit and empower members; plan workshops and events; develop leaders.
• Data management: track membership and campaigns in the CRM system.
• External partnerships: engage with coalitions, government agencies, and elected officials.
