Job summary

The South Carolina Department of Transportation seeks an Assistant District Construction Engineer to support the District Construction Engineer in managing district construction functions and supervising pavement-related operations. The role involves reviewing project plans, representing the department at public meetings, liaising with county and municipal officials, and overseeing CEI contracts to meet staffing needs.

Travel and variable hours may be required.

Qualifications

• A bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology, or Construction Science and Management with six years of engineering or construction management experience, or an approved equivalence.
• Physical demands include sitting or standing for extended periods; travel may be required; may work outside normal hours during emergencies and inclement weather.
• The position may be exposed to outside environments and noise in all weather conditions.

Responsibilities

• Assist the District Construction Engineer in managing district construction functions.
• Prepare responses to inquiries from SCDOT personnel, state and federal agencies, and the public.
• Review plans for proposed projects and recommend improvements.
• Represent the Department at public meetings; liaise with county and municipal officials.
• Supervise District Asphalt Manager and support Resident Construction Engineers on pavement matters.
• Provide expert testimony in court regarding engineering procedures.
• Manage CEI contracts to meet staffing needs.
• Review encroachment permit applications and assign reviews.
