Job description

Position Title: District Maintenance/Custodian

Reports To: Superintendent

Evaluation: Performance of this job will be evaluated annually in accordance with the provisions of the Board’s policy on evaluation. The evaluation will be completed by the Superintendent.

Terms of Employment: 12 months a year, 40 hours per week. Salary/benefits and most conditions of employment are set by the Board of Education by negotiated contract. Work year and performance responsibilities are to be established by the Board of Education. Daily schedule, specific tasks, and conditions of employment not otherwise addressed may be assigned by the Superintendent. Position is FLSA non-exempt and non-FEA (union).

Demonstrated experience in building and grounds work, including:

Basic knowledge and expertise in techniques of electrical repair and maintenance, carpentry, and grounds maintenance.

Ability to read various district communications and technical manuals.

Ability to write instructions and reports.

Ability to work collaboratively with other school staff.

Required clearances:

Certificate of good health signed by a licensed physician.

State of Illinois fingerprinting and background check in compliance with state code and district policy requirements. (A fingerprint-based criminal history records check and a check of the Statewide Sex Offender Database and Violent Offender Against Youth Database (when available) will be performed on the successful candidate as required by State law. Each newly hired employee must complete an Immigration and Naturalization Service Form as required by federal law. An EMployment History Review (EHR) will be completed by the district. The District retains the right to discharge any employee whose criminal background investigation reveals a conviction for committing or attempting to commit any of the offenses outlined in Section 5/21-23a of The School Code or who falsifies, or omits facts from, his or her employment application or other employment documents.)

First Aid/CPR training.

Required skills:

Able to lift at least 50 pounds, push or pull at least 40 pounds.

Able to sit, stand, kneel, and walk as necessary to adequately complete essential elements of the position

Able to write and speak or otherwise reasonably communicate with staff members and contractors

Able to perform the performance responsibilities as listed below

Able to organize work in order to complete assigned tasks

Brief Description of Position:

The District Maintenance/Custodian participates in the performance of all custodial and maintenance activities with personnel in the district.

He/she must be knowledgeable in the areas of plumbing, heating, air conditioning, electrical maintenance, carpentry, and general maintenance.

He/she has a major responsibility for the upkeep of the school grounds.

Performance Responsibilities: General:

Cleans and maintains all boilers and other HVAC equipment.

Participates in necessary painting and general repairs to plumbing, electrical, carpentry, windows, and general mechanical areas.

Assists in planning for remodeling and renovation work and participates in that work.

Maintains the school grounds with assistance from the custodial staff as needed.

Coordinates and assists in snow removal.

Participates in the general cleaning and maintenance of the school buildings.

Orders and receives supplies and equipment, and maintains necessary inventories.

Adheres the district budget with assistance from the Business Manager.

Assumes responsibility for the general security of the buildings.

Assumes responsibility for the general fire safety of the buildings.

Conducts an ongoing program of general maintenance, upkeep, and repair.

Serves as liaison for all general contractors, inspectors, and district administration regarding services to grounds and buildings.

Ensures compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local laws regarding buildings and grounds and ensures all equipment and building inspections are completed. (boilers, elevator, sprinklers, fire alarms, etc.)

Responsible for the setting up and tearing down of equipment during special events; i.e., graduation, conferences, concerts, football games, etc.

Will be available to fire and police departments on a 24-hour call basis when building or ground alarms sound.

Serves as the Asbestos Designated Person for the district.

Transports food and milk as needed between buildings, curricular or extracurricular materials, and other goods or materials as needed by the district.

Performance Responsibilities: Personnel:

Assists with training of all custodial and maintenance personnel, including safety and proper operation training.

Advises on the hiring of contractors to perform certain maintenance or repair services and monitors the performance of these same contractors.

Assists with summer cleaning personnel, programs, and schedules.

Acts as a substitute custodian as needed.

Performance Responsibilities: Maintenance:

Examines buildings on a regular basis for needed repairs, maintenance, and cleanliness utilizing the district's Maintenance Plan.

Reviews the Maintenance Plan annually with the Superintendent.

Establishes and recommends, in cooperation with administration, priorities on repair projects and estimates the cost of these projects.

Plans and oversees all maintenance and repair work and develops an efficient system for dealing with emergency repair problems.

Performs or schedules maintenance as required.

Orders materials as needed, and makes recommendations of supplies and equipment for purchase.

Consults with administrators regarding the establishment of a regular preventative maintenance program as part of the district’s Maintenance Plan

Additional Performance Responsibilities

Reports to the Superintendent, as soon as possible, regarding emergencies and major breakdowns/deficiencies in all facets of the position.

Checks email daily and responds as needed.

Arrives punctually and does not leave during the work day for non-work activities without permission from the Superintendent.

Follows all rules, regulations, policies, etc., pertaining to the completion of all facets of the position.

Follows established safety procedures at all times.

Performs all other duties as assigned by the Superintendent.
