Job summary

Elastic is seeking a Director of Software Engineering to lead the Elasticsearch Distributed Systems organization. You will guide ~40 engineers and managers to tackle deep distributed systems challenges, enabling Elasticsearch to excel at scale and serve diverse users across the world.

You will drive architecture, performance, reliability, and cost improvements, mentor leaders, and partner with product teams to deliver complex initiatives across Elastic.

Qualifications

• Experience leading large software/engineering organizations and managers.
• Hands-on software engineering background with strong CS fundamentals.
• Proven ability to design and guide large-scale distributed systems.

Responsibilities

• Develop and execute a long-term engineering strategy for Elasticsearch distributed systems.
• Drive performance, scalability, reliability, and cost improvements, including Serverless support.
• Lead evolution of core distributed architecture: coordination, data allocation, indexing, replication, recovery.
• Provide technical leadership for complex initiatives across multiple teams and leaders.
• Own outcomes, balancing complexity, customer impact, reliability, and maintainability.
• Hire, mentor and develop engineering managers and senior leaders; foster inclusive culture.
• Plan staffing and resources; ensure teams can deliver on priorities.
• Partner with product and other Elastic teams to align priorities and initiatives.
• Act as escalation point for technical/operational challenges; drive effective resolution.
• Communicate strategy and progress to senior executives; influence key decisions.
• Oversee performance management and development plans for your managers.
