Job summary

Elastic is seeking a Director of Software Engineering to lead the Elasticsearch Distributed Systems organization, focusing on scale, performance, and resilience, particularly for Serverless Elasticsearch.

You will lead an approx. 40 engineers and managers across distributed locations, shaping long-term strategy, architecture, and leadership development while partnering with product and executive teams.

Qualifications

• Experience leading large-scale engineering organisations with engineering managers and senior technical leaders.
• Hands-on software engineering background with strong CS fundamentals.
• Experience designing, building or operating complex distributed systems such as databases, storage or data processing.

Responsibilities

• Develop and execute a long-term engineering strategy for Elasticsearch's distributed systems.
• Drive performance, scalability, reliability and cost efficiency, including Serverless foundations.
• Lead evolution of core distributed architecture: cluster coordination, data allocation, indexing, replication and recovery.
• Provide technical leadership for complex initiatives and navigate architectural trade-offs.
• Own engineering outcomes across the organisation and ensure maintainability and reliability.
• Mentor, hire and develop engineering managers and senior technical leaders; foster inclusive culture.
• Plan staffing and resources to deliver on strategic priorities.
• Collaborate with Product Management and other teams across Elastic on priority initiatives.
• Act as senior escalation point for critical technical and operational challenges.
• Communicate strategy and progress to senior executives and influence decisions.
• Oversee performance management and promotions within your teams.
