Job summary

Abraxas Youth and Family Services seeks a Director of Safety & Security to oversee overall safety, security, and maintenance of our Morgantown facility. The role requires expert crisis management, staff supervision, and strong collaboration with leadership to ensure a safe environment for youth and staff.

The incumbent will train staff in de-escalation and Safe Crisis Management, participate in safety committees, and manage emergency procedures.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in behavioral or social science field and minimum five years of progressively responsible experience in residential and non-residential program/facility; three years in supervisory/managerial role.
• Master’s degree in behavioral or social science field with minimum four years of progressive experience; two years in supervisory/managerial role.
• Bachelor’s degree in related field and one year work experience with children; or Associate’s degree and three years’ work experience with children.
• Supervisory experience is preferred.

Responsibilities

• Responsible for the overall safety and security of the facility including facilities management, workplace safety and violence reduction initiatives.
• Oversees facility security including use of metal detectors, visitor sign-in, searches, contraband controls, and perimeter safety.
• Oversees the maintenance department and participates in the Safety Committee.
• Participates in staff meetings to share observations and recommendations to improve operations and teamwork.
• Observes client behavior and intervenes appropriately.
• Debriefs with youth, staff, and leadership after aggressive incidents.
• Manages aggressive client behavior and ensures a safe environment.
• Responds to emergencies including evacuation, CPR or First Aid.
• Trains staff in safety plans and de-escalation techniques; uses Safe Crisis Management.
• Assists the Executive Director as needed and attends meetings and conferences.
• Supports the organization’s philosophy and Seven Key Principles of care.

What You’ll Do

• Responsible for the overall safety and security of the facility to include facilities management, workplace safety and violence reduction initiatives.
• Oversees facility security to include use of metal detectors, visitor sign-in procedures, resident searches, contraband and room searches, inventory controls and perimeter safety.
• Oversees the facility maintenance department and participates as a member of the Safety Committee.
• Participates in staff meetings by sharing observations and recommendations regarding the administrative office, facilities, and staff relations to identify and resolve problems and function as a unified team.
• Observes client behavior and intervenes appropriately.
• Debriefs with youth, staff, and facility leadership after aggressive or assaultive behavior.
• Manages aggressive client behavior and promotes a safe a safe and effective environment.
• Observes activities and responds accordingly including emergency procedures include evacuation, CPR or First Aid.
• Trains and role models the use of safety plans and related de‑escalation techniques.
• Demonstrates appropriate use of client intervention skills and Safe Crisis Management (SCM) techniques; monitors client interventions and provides guidance to other employees as necessary.
• Assists the Executive Director as needed
• Attends staff meetings and conferences
• Supports the Youth Services’ philosophy and mission and promotes the Seven Key Principles of care

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in behavioral or social science field and minimum five years of progressively responsible experience in residential and non-residential program/facility of which three years must be in a supervisory or managerial level; OR
• Master’s degree in behavioral or social science field and minimum four years of progressively responsible experience in residential and non-residential program/facility of which two years experience must be in a supervisory or managerial level.
• Bachelor’s degree in related field and one (1) year work experience with children OR Associate’s degree (60 college credit hours) and three years’ work experience with children.
• Supervisory experience is also preferred.

Other Qualifications:

• At least twenty‑one (21) years of age
• Ability to pass the Bureau of Prisons backgroundcheck with a review that goes back 7 years.
• Must have a valid Driver's License
• Valid registered vehicle insurance.
• Must pass both federal and state background checks which screen for crimes including, but not limited to drug related crimes, violent crimes, sexual abuse, domestic violence, child abuse, and repeated misdemeanors.
• Satisfactory completion of background screening and applicable pre‑employment checks, including but not limited to employment and/or personal reference and driving records.
• Ability to work with computers and the necessary software typically used by the department.
• Non-communicable diseases physical exam.

Schedule

• Must be available to work weekends!

Physical Requirements

• Ability to stand, walk, and remain active and engaged throughout an 8-hour residential shift
• Ability to work in a secure, controlled‑access residential facility environment
• Ability to respond quickly and appropriately to safety emergencies
