Job summary

Markel Corporation seeks a Director, Underwriting to lead strategic development and execution of underwriting goals across the organization. You will guide underwriting teams, drive profitability, growth and retention of new and renewal business aligned with underwriting strategies.

You will set standards for the commercial property line, manage the Railroad book, coach staff, and coordinate with Operations, Marketing and other internal resources to deliver best-in-class service.

Qualifications

• Minimum 10+ years of underwriting experience, with at least 5 years in Railroad/Inland Marine.
• Superior verbal and written communication skills; collaborative style.
• Underwriting authority, strategic leadership and risk assessment.

Responsibilities

• Proactively identify new market opportunities and product offerings; support cross-sell by addressing client needs.
• Set underwriting standards and strategy for the commercial property product line.
• Manage the Railroad book and portfolio aggregation; provide direction to regional teams.
• Coordinate training for underwriters and staff; liaise with Operations, Marketing and Business Development.
