St. Simon the Apostle Catholic Church - Director of Youth Ministry

The Director of Youth Ministry at St. Simon the Apostle is responsible for creating and leading a comprehensive youth ministry program that fosters a personal relationship with God through Jesus Christ and the Catholic Church. This role engages high school youth in the life of the parish through active participation in the Eucharist, catechesis, service, and community life. The Director will work collaboratively with parish staff and volunteers to promote a vibrant and growing youth program that supports faith development and Catholic identity.

Job Responsibilities

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

Pastoral Ministry

  • Provide pastoral outreach and presence to all high school-aged youth of St. Simon the Apostle Parish.
  • Lead and coordinate catechetical programming and youth activities that reflect the teachings of Jesus Christ and the Church, using approved materials and models (e.g., Life Teen, Rebuilt).
  • Recruit, train, and supervise a Core Team of adult and young adult volunteers.
  • Plan, organize, and lead Sunday youth ministry nights and other catechetical events.
  • Plan and oversee at least two annual retreats (e.g., Steubenville Youth Conference, service immersion trips, Confirmation retreat).
  • Coordinate and participate in service opportunities for youth throughout the year.

Sacramental Preparation

  • Direct and implement Confirmation preparation for youth in accordance with archdiocesan guidelines, including scheduling, curriculum, retreats, and parent communication.

Community and Collaboration

  • Serve as a resource for youth, parents, volunteers, and parishioners to foster greater understanding and participation in youth ministry.
  • Collaborate with parish staff and the wider Catholic community to strengthen youth engagement and evangelization efforts.


Administrative Responsibilities

  • Serve as the primary staff person for youth ministry; oversee planning, direction, and evaluation of all youth programs.
  • Collaborate with the Director of Religious Education and other staff on intergenerational events and liturgical celebrations.
  • Determine and schedule parish facilities for youth events and meetings.
  • Attend parish staff meetings and participate in parish-wide initiatives as appropriate.
  • Develop and manage the youth ministry budget in coordination with the parish business manager.
  • Maintain regular communication with youth and parents through emails, parish website, social media, and printed materials.
  • Ensure Safe Environment compliance for all youth ministry volunteers, including VIRTUS training and background checks.

Resources

  • Utilizes appropriate catechetical materials such as Life Teen, Rebuilt, and Decision Point (Confirmation). Additional resources may be approved by the pastor.
Job Requirements

Educational Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree required, preference for degree in theology, religious education, or a related field.

Experience

  • Minimum 2–3 years in youth ministry or a related field.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Confirmed, practicing Catholic in good standing with the Church.
  • Emotionally and spiritually mature.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to lead prayer, retreats, and faith-sharing experiences.
  • Knowledge of liturgical norms and Catholic teachings.
  • Ability to multitask, organize events, and work independently.
  • Competent with Microsoft Office, Google Suite, and common social media platforms.
  • Comfortable with A/V equipment and basic tech troubleshooting.
  • Compliant with all archdiocesan safe environment protocols.

Physical Requirements

  • Must possess energy levels consistent with youth ministry demands.
  • Must be sighted and capable of hearing.
  • Must be able to lift and move 50 lbs.

Working Conditions

  • Evening, weekend, and holy day responsibilities required.
  • Occasional travel for retreats, conferences, or events.
  • Youth mainly drawn from multiple area public and private high schools.
