Job summary

Michigan International Prep School (MIPS) is seeking a Director of Technology to steer the district’s tech strategy, data analytics, and AI initiatives. The role combines visionary leadership with hands-on management of hardware deployments, privacy, and staff engagement.

The position is remote/hybrid with travel to Learning Labs four days weekly, driving digital tools and student outcomes across the district. A champion of innovation, data-driven decisions, and secure IT operations is essential.

Qualifications

• Master’s degree in education leadership, ed tech, IT, or equivalent experience.
• Proven ability to develop strategic plans, manage multi-year budgets, and lead large-scale software integrations.
• Expert-level knowledge of Google Workspace, SIS/LMS platforms, data visualization tools (Looker Studio, Tableau), and cybersecurity frameworks.
• Demonstrated leadership and collaboration across teams in a district-wide tech environment.

Position Title: Director of Technology

Position Classification: Non-Exempt

Location: Michigan (Remote/Hybrid with travel to Learning Labs) (Four days per week in a learning lab.)

Position Summary

The Director of Technology is an executive leader responsible for the strategic planning, implementation, and management of the district’s technological ecosystem. This role balances high-level visionary leadership with hands‑on oversight of hardware deployments, data integrity, and AI initiatives. You will ensure that MIPS’s "neighborhood school online" is supported by robust, secure, and cutting‑edge digital tools while leading staff engagement and driving organizational improvement through advanced data analytics.

Key Responsibilities

1. Strategic Planning & Data-Driven Improvement

• Organizational Strategic Roadmap: Develop and maintain a multi-year technology strategic plan that aligns with MIPS’s mission. This includes forecasting infrastructure needs and evaluating the educational impact of current tools.
• Advanced Dashboard Management: Lead the design and evolution of district-wide dashboards. Transform raw data from the DataHub and other sources into actionable insights regarding student achievement, mentoring performance, and engagement.
• Data Utilization: Establish frameworks for how the organization uses data. Collaborate with leadership to ensure data-driven decision-making is integrated into all departments to improve student outcomes and operational efficiency.
• • MICIP & Profiles: Serve as a core member of the Michigan Integrated Continuous Improvement Process (MICIP) team, providing the technical data profile required for district performance metrics.

2. Technology Innovation & Trend Analysis

• Emerging Tech Research: Actively research and pilot latest technology trends, including Generative AI, adaptive learning software, and virtual collaboration tools to keep MIPS at the forefront of the digital landscape.
• Software Lifecycle Management: Continuously evaluate the effectiveness of the district’s software stack (e.g., Xello, EDM, Scheduled Hawk), recommending upgrades or shifts in strategy to prevent technical debt and ensure "best-in-class" toolsets.
• Innovation Leadership: Serve as the district’s "Chief Innovation Officer" by identifying how new technologies can solve traditional barriers in virtual education.

3. Cybersecurity & Data Privacy Oversight

• System Fortification: Develop and monitor district-wide cybersecurity protocols to protect the network from unauthorized access and cyber threats.
• Compliance: Ensure all operations comply with FERPA, COPPA, CIPA, and Michigan-specific student data privacy laws.
• Incident Response & Training: Lead responses to security threats and conduct regular cybersecurity awareness training for all MIPS staff.

4. Logistical Oversight & Inventory Control

• Inventory & Logistics: Maintain a rigorous, up-to-date inventory of district Chromebooks and staff laptops; oversee the deployment and recovery logistics for a distributed workforce and student body.
• Technical Support: Provide high-level troubleshooting and support to staff, students, and families to ensure seamless learning.

5. District-wide Collaboration & Initiatives

• Student First Support: Implement the “Student First” Customer Service Module and ensure all technology staff adhere to the customer service standards adopted by Reimagine Education.
• New Initiatives: Oversee the technical rollout of all new district initiatives, ensuring staff have the training and tools necessary for successful implementation.
• Collaboration with all teams: Software and technology impact all teams in organization. Must have a collaborative approach to ensuring internal customer service among team members.
• Team Leadership: Lead and mentor all members of the technology team, fostering a culture of high performance and student-centered service.

Qualifications & Desired Skills

• Education: Must hold a Master’s Degree in Education Leadership, Educational Technology, Information Technology, or a closely related field or have relevant experience.
• Strategic Skillset: Demonstrated ability to develop strategic plans, manage complex budgets, and lead large-scale software integrations.
• Technical Proficiency: Expert-level knowledge of Google Workspace, SIS/LMS platforms, data visualization tools (e.g., Looker Studio, Tableau), and cybersecurity frameworks.
