Job Description

Title: Director of Technology

Reports to: Head of School

The Miami Valley School (MVS). Our mission is to challenge young people of promise to become self-sustaining learners and compassionate global citizens. For almost 60+ years, MVS has provided a unique learning option for families in the Dayton, Ohio, community. Here, faculty are educators who are ready to help refine a truly differentiated educational opportunity as MVS becomes a nationally-recognised leader in experience-based learning. Here, every member of the MVS community is committed to transformative immersive learning in the classroom and during our Immersion term. Equally important is our commitment to Social Emotional Learning (SEL), through which our students learn the skills and competencies necessary to navigate an ever-shifting world with confidence and curiosity. Here, we learn because we do.

The Role. MVS is seeking a knowledgeable, meticulous, and creative technology leader to serve as Director of Technology. This pivotal role acts as the lead technology engineer, primary support technician, and strategic leadership liaison for the school's technology department. Directing all department operations, the Director oversees the design, provisioning, deployment, configuration, and maintenance of all campus technology resources. Key responsibilities include managing student and employee devices, internet and intranet routing, network security, account provisioning, printing systems, VoIP, and campus-wide WiFi. Deep expertise in Windows and Linux system administration is imperative, paired with an eager commitment to continuous learning. As a customer service-oriented leader, this individual interacts daily with the entire school community—including students from early childhood through high school, faculty, staff, and families—handling every interaction with high empathy, patience, and skill.

The Opportunity. All members of MVS’ vibrant faculty bring the school’s mission and vision to life each day for students and families in the Dayton community. Each day we live out our mission through our core values: integrity, celebration, grit, and kindness. As a part of our dynamic team, you will have the opportunity to:

Expand Global Leadership. MVS is known for its academic and extracurricular programming, and with you on our team, we will continue to grow with our students as leaders of Global Citizenship and stewards of civil discourse.

Enhance Cultural Experiences. Through your multicultural lens and passion for experiences in which students can be empathetic, you will support faculty in creating awe-inspiring programs utilizing the MVS Immersion Method™ and cultivate a sense of courage in students to experience the world, explore passions, and dive deep into content.

Develop Character and Wellness. To support the overall wellness of our vibrant community, you’ll have the opportunity to meaningfully connect and collaborate with students and families.

Innovate. As we continue to develop our Immersive Learning programming, you will be part of a team that is enhancing professional learning nationwide and becoming a thought leader for immersive learning experiences that stretch beyond the traditional school experience.

Couple Academic Rigor with Increased Accessibility. Through your intentional support and empowerment, our students will explore their unique learning needs, utilize critical thinking, and begin to think about and create solutions for today’s pressing challenges.

Collaborate as part of a World-Class Team. In your role at MVS, you will work alongside dedicated faculty who have taught and learned all over the world and in a variety of school contexts. Your colleagues are artists, researchers, entrepreneurs, published authors, professional musicians, armed services veterans, and thespians. Most importantly, they are compassionate and caring educators committed to lifelong learning.

And of course, you will get to make an impact! As the Director of Technology, you will get to join young people on their journey through discovering their sense of self, building healthy relationships, and growing both personally and socially. You will have the privilege of being a supportive resource and guidepost for students, families, faculty, and staff.

Expectations:

  • Relational leadership: Build trusted, collaborative partnerships across administration, faculty, staff, parents, and students with a "listen-first" philosophy.
  • Proactive communication: Deliver clear, transparent, and timely communication tailored to diverse audiences (prospective families, faculty, tech-novices, and leadership).
  • Operational agility: Prioritize and execute complex, multi-stakeholder initiatives independently while meeting hard deadlines.
  • Community investment: Engage visibly in campus life beyond core technical duties (e.g., advising, attendance at major school traditions).
  • Availability mindset: Maintain flexibility for evening/weekend critical maintenance windows or crisis response.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Strategic Vision & EdTech Integration: Partner with division heads and the leadership team to align technology roadmap with institutional strategic planning, modern pedagogy, and AI/digital literacy trends.
  • Infrastructure & Cybersecurity Oversight: Oversee enterprise systems, network architecture, cloud services and school-wide cybersecurity posture, student data privacy compliance, security and camera systems, and disaster recovery.
  • Faculty/Staff Capacity & Professional Learning: Design and coordinate targeted pedagogical technology training, coaching faculty/staff to integrate digital tools meaningfully through direct, hands on instructional support.
  • Leadership & Tier-3 Support: Guide technical operations (supported by internal staff/student tech cohorts where applicable), stepping in for high-impact tier-3 troubleshooting and user empowerment.
  • Budget & Vendor Lifecycle: Manage hardware/software lifecycle planning, vendor relationships and departmental budgeting aligned with school fiscal priorities.
  • Governance Support & Confidentiality: Provide dedicated technological assistance to the Board of Trustees and Board Chairperson, while maintaining strict confidentiality regarding board proceedings, school leadership and community matters.

Leadership Team and Community Member

Communicate regularly with the Head of School to keep them fully apprised of all activity in the technology department.

Provide timely updates to the Board of Trustees at least 5 times a year about technology department activities, and provide periodic dashboard updates as requested.

Serve as an active and engaged member of the leadership team.

Qualifications

Education: Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Educational Technology, or a related field (master’s or relevant certifications preferred).

Experience: 5+ years in educational technology, with experience in a senior leadership or director-level role managing departmental staff, budgets and enterprise infrastructure strongly preferred.

Technical Fluency: Demonstrated mastery of modern cloud/hybrid environments (Google Workspace/M365), identity management, enterprise networking (WiFi, VLANs, firewalls) and endpoint management (MDM).

EdTech & Pedagogy Acumen: Deep understanding of how independent schools balance tradition with digital innovation, safety and screen-time/wellness policies.

Interpersonal EQ: Exceptional emotional intelligence, crisis composure and cross-functional diplomatic communication skills.

Benefits

This is a full-time opportunity that provides a comprehensive benefits package, including medical, dental and vision plans, a matching 403(b) program and 50% tuition remission for the children of employees.
