Job summary

StevenDouglas in Austin, TX is seeking a Director of Technical Accounting, External Reporting & Policies to lead complex accounting, revenue recognition, policy development and external disclosures as the company scales beyond $1B in revenue.

The ideal candidate partners with Legal, FP&A, Sales and business-unit leaders, translates technical accounting into business guidance, drives reporting improvements, and serves as the primary liaison with external auditors.

Qualifications

• CPA license is required.
• Bachelor's degree in Finance, Accounting or business-related field.
• AI experience with agentic workflows and AI tooling (e.g., LangChain, AutoGen, CrewAI, Claude Agent SDK, etc.).
• Current, active use of AI agents in day-to-day workflow.
• Ability to discuss architecture decisions, tooling choices, failure modes, and agent performance.
• Big 4 foundation: Minimum Manager-level experience at a Big 4 public accounting firm.
• 4–5+ years of software industry experience beyond public accounting.
• Scaling experience: direct experience with a software company's growth journey through $1B+ in revenue.
• Leadership presence: drive change and influence stakeholders.
• Communication: translate technical accounting concepts for non-accountants.
• Experience navigating an IPO or high-growth pre/post-IPO environment.

Responsibilities

• Own technical accounting research, positions, and documentation for complex and emerging transactions (revenue recognition, business combinations, equity, leases, and other software-industry-specific matters)
• Lead internal and external reporting processes, including accurate, complete and timely financial statements and footnote disclosures
• Develop, maintain, and evolve accounting policies that scale with a fast-growing software business
• Perform stock-based compensation accounting
• Partner cross-functionally with Legal, FP&A, Sales, and business unit leaders — translating technical accounting requirements into practical, business-friendly guidance
• Anticipate accounting implications of new products, deal structures, and business models before they become a problem
• Drive process improvements and changes to reporting infrastructure as the company scales
• Serve as a key point of contact for external auditors on technical matters

Reporting to the VP, the Director of Technical Accounting, External Reporting & Policies is a critical leadership role for someone who has been through the scaling journey in software — someone who's operated at a company that grew past $1B+ in revenue and understands firsthand what that inflection point demands from technical accounting and external reporting functions. We are seeking a "business partner" who happens to have deep technical accounting expertise.
