Job summary

Broome Street Academy in New York, NY, seeks a Director of Teaching and Learning to drive instructional leadership from our on-site campus at 555 Broome Street. The role oversees curriculum, assessments, and coaching to accelerate Regents proficiency and credit accumulation while aligning with wraparound student support.

Reports to the Head of School. Ideal candidates bring 3+ years teaching, 2+ years in instructional leadership, and a track record of improving outcomes in public schools.

Qualifications

  • 3+ years of teaching experience
  • 2+ years in instructional leadership in a secondary setting
  • Proven success improving academic outcomes in a public school
  • Deep understanding of Regents pathways, credit accumulation, and NYSED graduation
  • Experience working with students with complex learning needs
  • Ability to use data to drive instruction, set goals, and monitor progress
  • Proven capacity to build, coach, and hold adults accountable
  • Expertise in Humanities or STEM with willingness to learn more

  • Coach teachers through structured observation and feedback systems.
  • Design and facilitate professional development aligned to priorities.
  • Ensure consistent instructional expectations across classrooms.
  • Collaborate with Special Education and ELL staff to ensure rigor and accommodations.

The School

As NYC's only charter high school that is both a transfer school and a fully embedded community school in partnership with The Door, BSA serves over-age, under-credited students who deserve rigorous academic pathways alongside comprehensive wraparound support.

The Director of Teaching and Learning (DTL) will serve as a hands-on instructional leader responsible for accelerating academic achievement across the school.

Core Responsibilities
Instructional Leadership
  • Lead curriculum alignment and implementation across departments.
  • Increase first-time Regents pass rates and overall proficiency levels.
  • Monitor instructional quality through observation, feedback, and coaching cycles.
Data & Accountability
  • Build and maintain a culture where instructional decisions are driven by real-time data.
  • Analyze key data points to identify gaps and develop targeted action plans.
  • Support the school in meeting SUNY Accountability Plan goals.
Teacher Development
  • Coach teachers through structured observation and feedback systems.
  • Design and facilitate professional development aligned to instructional priorities.
Systems & Execution
  • Ensure consistent instructional expectations across classrooms.
  • Work closely with all departments, including Special Education and ELL staff to ensure appropriate accommodations and rigor.
  • Contribute to instructional calendar planning and academic reporting.
What Success Looks Like in Three Years
  • Increased first-attempt Regents pass rates and reduced reliance on safety net pathways.
  • Built a department culture grounded in urgency, academic success and belief.
  • Strengthened vertical alignment across grades 9-12.
  • Established consistent instructional expectations across classrooms.
Qualifications and Professional Requirements
Required:
  • Minimum of 3+ years of teaching experience.
  • At least 2 years experience in instructional leadership in a secondary education setting.
  • Demonstrated success improving academic outcomes in a public school setting.
  • Deep understanding of Regents pathways, credit accumulation models, and NYSED graduation requirements.
  • Experience working with students with complex learning needs.
  • Proven ability to use data to drive instruction, set goals, and monitor progress.
  • Demonstrated capacity to build, coach, and hold adults accountable.
  • Expertise and experience in either Humanities or STEM content areas, with willingness to continue to learn more within these broad content areas.
  • Commitment to equity, inclusion, and culturally responsive leadership practices.
Preferred:
  • Master’s degree in Education, Educational Leadership, or a related field.
  • New York State School Building Leader (SBL) certification.
  • Prior experience leading in a public charter school environment.
  • Experience in school turnaround settings and/or experience in school start-up.
  • Valid teacher certification
