Responsibilities

  • Provide clinical leadership and operational oversight for Student Counseling Services, including short-term counseling and crisis intervention.
  • Develop and evaluate a comprehensive model of student mental health services and care coordination.
  • Establish standards of clinical practice consistent with ethics, laws, and evidence-informed practices.
  • Provide supervision and professional development for counseling staff and ensure quality assurance.
  • Lead mental health crisis response protocols, risk assessment, and referral processes.
  • Oversee virtual and external mental health services and ensure integration with college care.
  • Collaborate with the Dean of Students to integrate counseling within coordinated care and case management.
  • Serve as a clinical advisor on student mental health and partner with CARE Team and campus resources.
  • Maintain networks with community providers and hospitals to support continuity of care.
  • Set goals and use data to guide service delivery and resource allocation.
  • Contribute to planning, policies, and initiatives related to student well-being and success.
  • Manage resources, contracts, and budgeting for Student Counseling Services.

Job Description:
GENERAL STATEMENT OF RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Director of Student Counseling provides College-wide leadership and clinical oversight for the College's student counseling andmental health services, ensuring the delivery of high-quality,accessible, culturally responsive, and ethically sound servicesthat support student well-being and success. As the College's leadclinical mental health administrator, the Director establishesstandards of clinical practice, provides clinical supervision andconsultation, oversees counseling operations and mental healthcrisis response protocols, and ensures consistent quality of careacross College locations, instructional sites, and programs offeredat other locations. Working closely with the Dean of Students, the Director integratescounseling services within the College's coordinated care and casemanagement framework and collaborates with faculty, staff, andcommunity providers to strengthen referral pathways and continuityof care. The Director also oversees the effective use of virtualmental health services and other external mental health resourcesthat expand student access to care. The Director contributes clinical expertise related to studentmental health, behavioral health trends, crisis intervention,prevention, and psychological well-being and collaborates withStudent Wellness and Engagement and other College partners tosupport broader wellness, prevention, and student successstrategies. This position is based on the West Barnstable campusand requires travel to College locations, instructional sites, andprograms offered at other locations as needed.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:
  1. Provide clinical leadership and operational oversight forStudent Counseling Services, including short-term counseling,crisis intervention, consultation, referral, and continuity ofcare.
  2. Develop, implement, and continuously evaluate a comprehensivemodel of student mental health services that integratesCollege-based counseling, crisis response, consultation, referrals,community partnerships, virtual mental health services, and otherresources to provide students with appropriate and timely levels ofcare.
  3. Establish and maintain standards of clinical practiceconsistent with professional ethics, applicable laws andregulations, and evidence-informed practices, ensuring culturallyresponsive, trauma-informed, and student-centered care.
  4. Provide clinical supervision, consultation, mentoring, andprofessional development for counseling staff and other clinicalpersonnel and establish systems for clinical quality assurance,documentation review, professional competency, ethical practice,and adherence to applicable licensure and professionalstandards.
  5. Provide College-wide clinical leadership for mental healthcrisis response, including clinical protocols, risk-assessmentpractices, consultation, referral and escalation procedures,emergency and community partnerships, and post-incident clinicalreview.
  6. Provide leadership for the selection, implementation,oversight, and evaluation of virtual and externally provided mentalhealth services, ensuring effective integration with Collegecounseling, referral, crisis response, and coordinated careprocesses and monitoring utilization, access, quality, andeffectiveness.
  7. Work closely with the Dean of Students to integrate counselingand mental health services within the College's coordinated careand case management framework, establishing effective approaches toreferral, consultation, communication, follow-up, and continuity ofcare while maintaining appropriate clinical confidentiality andprofessional boundaries.
  8. Serve as the College's primary clinical advisor on studentmental health, providing consultation and expertise to Collegeleadership, faculty, staff, the CARE Team, and other partnersregarding student mental health trends, behavioral health concerns,crisis response, and appropriate intervention and referralstrategies.
  9. Serve as a member of the College's CARE Team and provideclinical expertise related to student mental health, behavioralhealth, risk, referral, and intervention planning.
  10. Maintain effective relationships and referral networks withcommunity mental health providers, hospitals, crisis services, andother external resources to support continuity and appropriatelevels of care.
  11. Establish goals, outcomes, and performance measures for studentcounseling and mental health services and use utilization data,student needs, emerging trends, quality indicators, and assessmentfindings to guide service delivery, resource allocation, andcontinuous improvement.
  12. Collaborate with the Director of Student Wellness andEngagement and other College partners on mental health education,prevention, awareness, stigma reduction, and help-seekinginitiatives, contributing clinical expertise while maintainingappropriate distinctions between clinical counseling andpopulation-level wellness promotion.
  13. Contribute clinical expertise to divisional and institutionalplanning, policies, protocols, technology implementation, andinitiatives related to student mental health, coordinated care,well-being, and student success.
  14. Develop and manage Student Counseling Services resources,contracts, and operating priorities in collaboration with the Deanof Students, and contribute to budget development, grantopportunities, staffing plans, and resource allocation.
  15. Perform other related duties consistent with theresponsibilities of the position.
Requirements:
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  1. Master's degree in Counseling, Clinical Psychology, SocialWork, or closely related clinical field.
  2. Current independent clinical licensure in Massachusetts (e.g.,LMHC, LICSW, LMFT, Psychologist, or equivalent), or eligibility toobtain appropriate Massachusetts independent clinical licensurewithin a specified period.
  3. Five (5) years of progressively responsible post-licensureclinical experience, including experience with young adults and/orcollege student populations.
  4. Three (3) years of progressively responsible clinicalleadership or supervisory experience, including supervision ofprofessional clinical staff.
  5. Demonstrated experience providing clinical leadership anddeveloping or overseeing clinical services, professional staff,referral networks, crisis protocols, and coordinated approaches tomental health care.
  6. Demonstrated expertise in crisis intervention, risk assessment,behavioral health consultation, professional ethics,confidentiality, and applicable clinical standards.
  7. Demonstrated ability to provide collaborative clinicalleadership, build effective partnerships, and communicateeffectively with diverse students, employees, providers, andcommunity partners.
  8. Unrestricted authorization to work in the United States.
ADDITIONAL PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  1. Experience providing clinical leadership in a college oruniversity counseling center or comparable setting.
  2. Experience providing clinical supervision to independentlylicensed and/or pre-licensed mental health professionals.
  3. Experience implementing or overseeing virtual mental healthservices, external mental health partnerships, electronic healthrecords, or other technology-enabled behavioral healthservices.
  4. Experience with behavioral intervention/CARE teams, crisisresponse, and campus-based coordinated care.
  5. Knowledge of community college students and contemporary issuesaffecting student mental health and well-being.

COMPENSATION

Full-time, Non-Unit Professional Position. Annual Salary range of $120,000- $125,000 dependent onqualifications. Includes participation in a comprehensive employeebenefits program and the option for membership in the MassachusettsState Employees' Retirement System.
