Job summary

WellGuard Assurance is seeking a Director of Underwriting to lead pricing, evaluation, and risk management for small employer group health insurance. You will set rating methodologies, oversee rate development, and collaborate with actuarial, sales, compliance, and product teams to align pricing with corporate targets.

The role requires cross-functional leadership, data-driven decision-making, and strong knowledge of ACA requirements, self-funded structures, and stop-loss concepts.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Business, Finance, Mathematics, Actuarial Science, Healthcare Administration, or a related field.
• 5+ years of health insurance underwriting experience, including small group focus.
• 3+ years of underwriting leadership with staff development responsibility.
• Hands-on experience with manual and experience rating methodologies, rate development, and pricing.
• Knowledge of self-funded and stop-loss arrangements and regulatory requirements.

Responsibilities

• Lead rate development and pricing strategy for small group health plans.
• Analyze group submissions using experience and manual rating methods.
• Monitor loss ratios and guide corrective pricing actions.
• Champion AI-enhanced rating approaches and calibrate automated processes.
• Manage carrier and reinsurance relationships; negotiate terms and rates.
• Serve as senior escalation point for broker inquiries and renewals.
• Oversee underwriting reporting and dashboards; drive process improvements.
• Collaborate on product design and plan configurations with actuarial and product teams.
• Maintain underwriting guideline governance and ensure consistency.
