Job summary

The Allen Institute seeks a Director of Scientific Computing to define and execute a long-term computing strategy powering Neural Dynamics research. You will oversee engineering teams, data infrastructure, and scalable pipelines for petabyte-scale datasets and large brain models.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in computer science, engineering, or related field or equivalent experience.
• 10+ years in computer science, data engineering, software development, data science, ML or related fields.
• Proven experience scaling tools and algorithms for large datasets.
• Expertise in ML and agentic workflows for large datasets.
• Experience leading engineering teams and strategic/operational planning.
• Strong leadership, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
• Understanding of software engineering best practices.
• Experience mentoring and career development.
• Excellent written and verbal communication and collaboration skills.

Responsibilities

• Execute a long-term strategy to scale computing platforms, data infrastructure, and data processing capabilities for ambitious science projects.
• Serve as a senior technology leader, collaborating across scientific, operational, and administrative teams.
• Establish best practices and standards for software engineering, including data management and infrastructure usage.
• Develop and foster collaborations with academia, nonprofits, tech companies, and standards bodies.
• Lead analysis of petascale multimodal biological data, leveraging ML for images, timeseries, and omics data.
• Build and operate performant data processing pipelines for science platforms and adopt emerging technologies.
• Partner with teams across the Institute to enable breakthrough discovery at the intersection of biology and computation.
