Nationwide is searching for a Property Risk Engineer to join our property / casualty loss control team. The candidate should have large property experience. This is a field engineering role with a heavy emphasis on food manufacturing accounts. In this role, you will perform risk management surveys to document COPE features of property and deliver risk management services with insureds to positively impact their loss experience. This is a work-from-home role, ideally positioned in California. We will also consider candidates domiciled in Nevada and Arizona. The role has an expected travel of 30%.

Experience needed for this role :
  • In-depth knowledge of process protection for hazards typically found in food manufacturing industries, including combustible dust processes, ammonia refrigeration systems, warehousing, industrial-scale cooking, and product drying operations.
  • Ability to apply appropriate NFPA Standards to evaluate fire protection systems, special suppression systems, water supplies, and inspection, testing, and maintenance (ITM) programs.

Job Description Summary

If you are a consultant at heart, with an affinity for the food and agriculture industry and a desire to learn and use your knowledge to improve operations and reduce potential loss exposure, we want to hear from you!

Our agribusiness risk management team develops relationships with customers, performs surveys to assess property controls, and recommends improvements to decrease risk. We share our knowledge across Nationwide to enhance our agriculture insurance lines and their market position.

As a Property Engineer, you’ll provide internal consulting to Risk Management, Claims, Underwriting, and Marketing regarding risk assessments on high-value property exposures. You’ll also offer external consulting to customers and agents about property exposures for existing sites and structures, as well as those in design and construction phases. You’ll act as the internal engineering resource and technical expert on property risks across diverse agribusiness industries.

Job Responsibilities :
  1. Performs Construction, Occupancy, Protection, and Exposure (COPE) surveys on prospective and renewal business with large property exposures or unique hazards. Analyzes property risks and hazards, including business income exposures, construction, occupancies, protection, and exposures.
  2. Recommends risk management programs and training to prevent, reduce, and mitigate property risk.
  3. Provides services such as thermal imaging, sprinkler analysis, engineering review on new construction projects, and sprinkler analysis of existing systems. Reports anomalies or deficiencies and recommends solutions.
  4. Demonstrates technical expertise in resolving questions regarding property exposures, fire protection, safety management, and provides support activities.
  5. Conducts research to identify and assess risks, and analyzes statistical data and underwriting information to prioritize clients/exposures of concern.
  6. Compiles risk data for developing and revising risk management and underwriting property guidelines.
  7. Maintains affiliations with industry organizations to stay current with trends and market conditions.
  8. Assists sales efforts for large prospects by presenting or coordinating information on loss control services. May help clients develop business contingency plans, risk reduction ideas, or engineering controls.
  9. Performs other responsibilities as assigned.
Reporting Relationships :

Reports to Manager, Director, or Associate Vice President. No direct reports.

Skills and Experience :
  • Education: Bachelor of Science in structural, mechanical, fire protection, or agricultural engineering.
  • Licenses/Certifications: Licensed Professional Engineer or relevant professional designations (e.g., CPCU, ARM, CFPS, CSSP, LEED).
  • Experience: At least eight years in engineering or loss control in the insurance or related field, including physical due diligence and Property Condition Assessments.
  • Knowledge and Skills: Knowledge of PML evaluations, building systems, NFPA, IBC, ASCE codes, effective communication, and risk analysis.

Values: Demonstrates Nationwide Values regularly and consistently.

Working Conditions: Must be able to make physical inspections, climb, stoop, bend, and lift up to 50 lbs. May require travel. Valid driver’s license required.
