Job summary

Vanderbilt University seeks a Director of Payroll Operations to provide strategic, operational, and transformational leadership for payroll. The role modernizes processes through automation, analytics, and Oracle Cloud HCM, while ensuring compliance and timely payroll processing.

The director will lead a small team, collaborate across People, Culture and Belonging, Finance, VUIT, and business units, and drive a multiyear modernization roadmap to create a technology-enabled, data-driven payroll

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution is required.
MBA or Master’s degree esp. in a related field preferred.
Certified Payroll Professional (CPP) designation is preferred.
Eight or more years of payroll experience in a large organization.
Experience with multi-state payroll tax and international tax compliance.
Deep expertise with payroll platforms such as Oracle Cloud HCM, Workday, PeopleSoft, or SAP.
Proven leadership and staff development capabilities.

Responsibilities

Provide leadership and oversight of all daily payroll operations and ensure accurate processing.
Supervise staff, set priorities, and monitor performance.
Oversee the international tax team and 1042-S reporting.
Ensure compliance with policies, regulations, and tax requirements.
Review payroll transactions, off-cycle payrolls, and special payments.
Oversee payroll reconciliations, tax reporting, and month-end processing.
Maintain internal controls and segregation of duties across payroll processes.
Lead payroll system enhancements, testing, and adoption with strong controls.
